Recently some of Canada's prostitution laws were struck down by the Supreme Court as it opined they deprived 'working women' of the safety accorded to the rest of society.

The Canadian Government has announced they will be passing new laws shortly. Johns will be prosecuted and anyone 'living or earning in any way from the prostitution of another.'

As Justice |Minister Peter McKay (a right burke if ever there was one,) gleefully announced the law is written so: "if two women over eighteen are together on the street engaged in prostitution then they each may be prosecuted for working with the other." It would also apply to prostitutes sharing accommodation, for instance and (presumably) a dependent relative.

How is that supposed to give them the safety of being able to call the police which the Supreme Court said they should have?

The only benefit I can see is that Peter McKay is no longer Minister for Defence.

The only benefit I can see is that Peter MacKay is no longer Minister for Defence

Don't knock it; that's no small benefit!

..and one suspects this rubbish will turn out to be unconstitutional too (whatever its moral merits, if any). For a bunch of lawmakers, they don't seem to be very good at their primary job.
