Right, here goes.
The first thirty two to post "I'm in" get to be in the sweep.

The winner gets, erm, ideas anyone?

You'll just have to trust me when I pull the teams out of the hat.

I know absolutely nothing about football (sport in general) and am actively disinterested in it. My guesses often turn out to be luckily correct against all odds, so I'm in. (Just need to know who's playing.)

I once won around a thousand Swiss Francs by correctly guessing the score of a match between NZ and ZA. All the others in the bar were Rugby fanatics and I was told 'pick two numbers between 0 and 100'. I got it right.

EDIT:
I would like to suggest a prize.
A picture, framed, of Jurgen Klinsman.

Jurgen Klinsman, a German, is one of the few men to say something truthful in all of this World Cup build up and hoopla. (He is our head coach for the TEAM USA World Cup Soccer Team)

He was asked recently about "Can the US win the World Cup" and his response was more or less

"We need to worry about getting out of our group (my notes .. ye olde group of death), so thinking about the Cup is not realisitic."

A fair assessment of TEAM USA's chances.

The drama and vitriol soon followed. This is proof to me that TEAM USA soccer fans are as big a bunch of fools as soccer fans most anywhere else. Our sports media moreso.

We were robbed :mad::mad::mad:
Should have been a red card for Neymar, light one I know but our Japanese friend (not) referee gave a very soft penalty afterwards to Brazil so if that was a penalty the yellow card should have been red and we might have won, LOL. Also our later goal was disallowed after a non existent foul on the Brazilian goalkeeper, definitely not going on my holidays to Japan ever. :E:E

It was a world cup winning performance by the ref though.

mattpilot
13th Jun 2014, 07:01
Does anyone here think the Ref wasn't bribed?

I mean seriously, if Brazil does not win the WC or even gets kicked out to early, expect the little support the WC has in Brazil to turn into mass riots. So i don't think the thought that FIFA would fudge the game is to far off ...

Akrotiri71
13th Jun 2014, 07:39
Don't think the ref was bribed. He was just sh1te!
1. Never a penalty.
2. Croatia goalie to blame for both other goals. (A scuffed shot and a weak toe-poke, both from outside the box). Shocking.
3. Nothing wrong with Croatia's second goal. (Although I found out later that you are not allowed to touch the goalie in the 6-yard box. Never knew that).
Coaching Tip: Don't put high crosses in the 6-yard box.

I agree that the ref probably wasn't bribed, not in terms of getting a bung.I think he may have been instructed in no uncertain terms that Brazil had to win though.Nine times out of ten it wouldn't be a problem as Brazil would be good enough to win without resorting to jiggery pokery by the ref.

Unfortunately for them last night Croatia were the better side and it took a real intervention to give Brazil the win they needed to prevent their fans joining the Favella dwellers in taking the joint apart. This competition now has about as much gravitas as X factor.

Fox3WheresMyBanana
13th Jun 2014, 10:00
Oscar's toe-poke was a great goal. It wasn't pretty, but precisely because of that the goalie wasn't expecting it. Check the replay, and you'll see he has to reposition himself before diving.

High 5- 1
I don't think the Spanish played badly. There was the usual beautiful ball control, That neat bit around 70 mins where they played the ball out of defence with about 15 passes rather than hoofing it upfield and losing possession - all great.
I think there was one difference; speed. The Dutch were faster, top speed and acceleration. van Gaal knew that, and made it make the difference. And you could see from every little gesture that the Dutch were a team; players, coach, physios, everyone.

Joke of the Century: David Moyes could have engineered a 5-1 win over Spain too. http://www.husky-owners.com/forum/uploads/monthly_03_2014/post-6001-0-28986000-1395519968.gif

and how does Torres miss a sitter like that? It's not easy, it takes years of practice. http://www.husky-owners.com/forum/uploads/monthly_03_2014/post-6001-0-36788800-1395522092.gif

Diving in football has been raised to an art form in itself.Whilst the Brazil ref had no excuse you can see how the Spain one got conned. As the player went down he extended his leg towards the Dutch defender and in real time it could have appeared that he was brought down.In reality he created the whole incident himself from start to finish. The only answer is video replays.

Well done Italy, experience showing through in the end.

Good showing by a young England team. It's refreshing to see the young uns prepared to run at/take on defenders. Gerrard I think is past it. For the life of me, I cannot understand why Hodgson never put a young Henderson on Pirlo's shirt tail to stifle him. With the instruction, "If he goes for a p!ss, you go with him!" Pirlo has lost his pace, but can still put the ball on a sixpence. Great player.

Still a chance to go through.

Question: Why the hell do you pick a player for the international squad, based on the position they play for their club, and then play them out of position? (e.g. Rooney).

It's right to counsel caution after just one match but I am nailing my (Orange) colours to the mast too.I was working nights as a fork truck driver in a vegetable processing factory in the summer of '74 and watched all the World Cup games on the telly in their social club. Most disappointed when they lost the final. Then in '78 Rob Rensenbrink rolled the ball against the post against Argentina in virtually the last minute for what would have been the winner.

A magician?? Half of them are playing like they're the guy with his hand up a duck's arse, and the rest are playing like the duck.
They'd be overpaid on minimum wage.

I just realised that Australia play Spain next.

Both teams going home.

If Australia beat Spain, that would be a turn up for the books !

6 minutes of Injury time ????????

All finger nails intact - Spain never looked like scoring even one.

Chile now has to play Netherlands, then probably Brazil
Optimism is needed now, but there should be bucketloads around after their performance so far.

If Chile could knock out Argentina, that would make my day.

Not sure if they will end up playing each other.

If Argentina come second in their group, then Chile can meet them in the semis, otherwise it's the final only.

Nah.

I'm quietly chuffed at how well we did.

You have to understand that fuball is well down the list of sports in Oz.

We are at or near the top of world rankings for Cricket, Australian Rules, Rugby League, Netball and Hockey.

Soccer is back with Basketball and Rugby Union. Of mild interest but not mainstream. :E

As good as the players were in the Chile team, for me their goalkeeper 'saved the day' with some really brilliant goalkeeping worthy of any major european team. Who woulda thunk it that Spain would be leaving on a jet plane so early in the competition, not I.

Field Hockey. There's only one Hockey nation.
The Aussies have played well and have been good to watch.

I shall now adjourn - guess what's for dinner!!

I'll have you know the Darwin Ice Hockey team remains undefeated despite challenging all the top sides. :p

When Chile calm down and look at the DVD they might like to ponder about how their goalkeeper isn't very good at
picking out his own team mates when he kicks the ball long. Also they gave the ball away far too many times and that
could well cause them major problems in the future when they play better teams than Spain.

How many other nations play Aussie Rules...?

I think they play a bit in PNG and that's about it.

You have the usual "ex pats" in UK, US and other places that play
but that's about it.

It's a bit tough for places like the US as no padding is used ;) :O

How many other nations seriously play rugby? It's about as impressive as being near the top of the world rankings for synchronised swimming.

Thankfully, the smaller and slower Aussie athletes can't hit hard enough to require padding.

Uraguay up 1 - 0

If England go out of this world cup at this stage, it will open up the WC even more for some others.

Who could have thought that Spain and now possibly England would be gone at this stage ?
