Binners, mid 80's there was a F100 in nice colours with 'Flight Systems' painted somewhere on the nose I think. Just been reminiscing with a pal and neither of us can remember what it did or who it flew for. Anyone shed any light for two old persons with synapse failure?

Tracor Flight Systems (later taken over by BAE) flew F-100F's for use by the German AF, they were based in Germany (Wittmund iirc) and did target tug work for the F-4F's. They're still there as BAE SYSTEMS, now flying A-4 Skyhawks.

Cheers. Why were they flying from Binbrook then? This would have been around '86.

An F-100 in those colours was parked in a hangar at RAE Farnborough for a while in around 1990-91.

Flight Systems also used the F-100 for Dart towing for the German Air Force until around 1987:

There is a nice privately owned F-100F flying displays in the USA:

I think that pic of the white F-100 was taken at Mojave airport, CA.

F-100s can still be found there.

The F100 pic looks like the ones used for weapons testing and flying out of Mojave. I saw them there around 1980 when is was flying there working on my ATP.

The pic at #4 is at Mohave - it is captioned at the site I linked above.

Danish F100s were regular visitors to Lossie in the mid 70s.

Those Tracor F100's seemed to get around. There was one in the FRA hangar at Bournemouth back in the early 80's.

Tracor also had some much better aircraft which were operated out of Mojave, CA !

Mid to late 90s maybe. if I remember correctly, two went in to have their torque boxes replaced due to corrosion

Was it 1987? Super Saber was deployed for trials at Binbrook. Were they also conducting trials in 86?

and an earlier ‘Century Series’ fighter, namely a Flight Systems TF-100F Super Sabre, that had been based for trials at Binbrook during the summer months.

The guys that flew for FS that I had flown the -100 with would probably have had some reservations about calling the F-4C a much better aircraft...

Maybe, but, the pics RAFEngO posted are F-4D's... :E

They visited Hurn on Maintenance. Would have been 1986 summer, one melted a van parked behind. Engineer accidentally hit reheat during a ground engine run. I was on my aerodrome course at the NATS air traffic college. Loud boom was heard one lunchtime and then flames. We thought something had crashed, airport fire service deployed, then the following day I was told what had happened.

There was a proposal to fit them with the Universal Drone Pack, I believe...

The last time I saw the F-100 flying was an example from Tracor at Fairford, RIAT 1997. It was also the first time I saw a proper Eurofighter Typhoon or EF2000.

Last one I saw was in Denmark late 70's during a Standards Nav Ex to Copenhagen in a Puma with Dick Langworthy as Captain.. we landed for fuel and taxied past one with the back end off having runs I think, lots of discussions as to what it was as the angle it was parked didn't help identify it.

lots of discussions as to what it was

Mid 70s, AzANG operated two ex-Tbird F-100Fs for the Guard training school, both without guns, replaced with ballast and painted completely flat silver. For grins, took one thru NAS Lemoore one morning on an out and back from TUS with a student in training. Climbing down the ladder, the young wide-eyed Navy kid on the transient line crew asked me, "Is this a MiG?"

There was a wealthy dual-citizenship (So. Africa/US) guy who owned a flyable ex-Danish F-100F and kept it at El Paso Intl in 2003. Beautiful machine painted in Tbird display colors. Talked to his civvy crew chief at the time who said the guy's intent was to trade it in on a 2-seat F-106B. Right.

The rich guy also owned the only existing example of the old McDonnell 4-engine biz-jet which competed for sales with the Lockheed Jetstar....and lost. Evidently, his intention at the time was to restore it to a reliably flyable condition for trips between the US and So Africa.

The McDonnell 220 is still at El Paso - wish I'd known when I passed through there 20 years ago...
