Here is a copy describing how Orville Wright and the Hicksville cyclists started the whole thing...by Himself.

The engineering, the research, the testing, the theoretical calculations, the comparative reasoning, the ditching of accepted reasoning, the simple mechanical brilliance and discipline of repeated testing. The bravery! And, what's more, it's a likeable read.

Those men were giants!

And thanks to Project Gutenberg it's free to the world too!

I've always wondered where the bicycle building Wright brothers would have been if Sir George Cayley hadn't invented the tensioned wire spoked wheel as a means of providing his aircraft with a light weight undercarriage 50 years before Kitty Hawk.

I have a full set of the "Arthur Mee Children's Encyclopedia" from about 1933/34 or there abouts.

One of the early Stories in Vol 1 is devoted to "Orville and Wilbur work it out"

The project Gutenberg ebook should be required reading for any engineering student.
