Heart Condition and a Class 2 Medical

My 15 yo step daughter was born with a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot, where her heart is weird shaped. She had a surgical repair as an infant and is now a smart mouthed, lazy and temperamental so and so.........in other words a normal teen.

Would this condition restrict her from holding a class 2. She is fit and active, recently completed a 48 km bike ride with me over some difficult terrain, actually she had to keep stopping so I could catch up.... much to her disgust.

The CASA regs only say you cant have a safety related heart abnormaility but doesn't explain any further.

You could ask a DAME to explain what they mean?

Does she still see a Cardiologist? I can recommend a good one who has helped many pilots get back in the air, even after bypass surgery. He is also one that CASA go to as a subject matter expert.

The CASA medical requirements are geared to risk management. I have a couple of odd-ball genetic cardio things and I hold a full Class 1 medical (for now) and have done for 22 years (so far).

See if you can find the DAME Handbook on the CASA website. It disappears regularly for editing and then re-appears just after you needed it :ugh:

Did a quick Google, I would imagine a class 2 would be available provided she is not prone to blackouts/fainting and no arrhythmias are present. Best thing to do would be to get along to a DAME, or preferably a cardiologist who specialises in this sort of thing and see what they say.

The only things that tends do disqualify a pilot from holding a medical are things that may cause them to become incapacitated in flight, otherwise you'd be surprised at what people are flying around with and many cases with class 1's like Horatio and myself! :ok:
