Just a thumbs up for the TINY Firewall package. Version 2.0 is free and very functional.

A very small footprint, both in code and resources. It is a little short on fancy reporting - graphs and such - just a logfile, but it is very effective. Every test I have run against it shows my computer to not even be logged in. Stealth in every way - and I know all the numbers for my own machine. Impressive.

Anyway, if you are looking for a change or even a start with a firewall - take a look at TINY. It is the standard package for the USAF computers and many other large organisations - so it can't be bad.

There is a pay version (3.0) - but as far as I can see the protection is the same, but the administration / reporting is better. I for one don't see the point of that - I just need to know that all those nasty "requests" are blocked.

MG,

They only sell 3.0 now as far as I can see - NO more FREE version 2.0.

Agree its just great - any way to persuade them to continue 2.0 - I tried to "contact" but nada.... Zip .... etc. so far.

I have had it for ages now and tested it too. Says i am invisible to everyone, all ports blocked. Anything that i replace on my pc, it will ask me if i want to replace version x with version y. Excellent stuff. :) Best of all its(was) free. :)

That is a fairly obvious commercial progression. But nevermind. There is actually a better alternative, although not quite as small a footprint, but if you have 128M or better this will work:

Sygate Personal Firewall (http://soho.sygate.com)

Sygate make a personal firewall. It has a lot more features and is very informative. Some of the nicer bits of Tiny are missing, but it works well. I use this now and have no complaints at all.
