View Full Version : Bloody clocks changing

The imbecilic time change to +1 is upon us. Seems it's not just me that loathes it and gets confused. Some of our devices change, some don't.

I always try to remember which of the following do and which don't :

Computers
Satellite decoders
four cellphones
I-pad
TV
Internet routers
DVD player/recorder
Cooker clock
Clocks (various)
Car clocks
WiFi internet radio
cordless landline handsets
Satnavs

I never know which have changed and which haven't, chaos reigns. someone said to me this morning :

"Oh the clocks change, so if I wake up at 7 o'clock tomorrow morning it's really 6 o'clock."

"Er, no, wrong way round .......".

That's why these are my favourite., they're not connected to electrickery or internet and are completely independent. Wonderful.

Personally I would prefer British Summer Time (GMT + 1) all year round - I prefer lighter evenings.

In the past attempts to make this so have been thwarted by the Scottish lobby (the kids can't find their way to school in the ensuing darkness or something).

So, if Scotland were to vote for independence, we could go for BST all year round and they could go to whatever system suits them.

Fantastic, looking forward to it! It's the sign that spring is upon on us, and soon we'll be enjoying longer and longer days. The fact there's billions in savings to be had by extending daylight hours when they are most useful to most people is, of course, of no importance whatsoever to the GOS on this site.

I think last time this was considered the accident stats (morning and evening) were 'fixed' to show more accidents if the clock weren't fiddled with. Later, the true figures came out which showed the opposite.

Even without independence the Scots can do there own thing re time zones.

It's long overdue timer that this silly messing around with clocks (and people's body clocks) stopped.

When Mrs TTN was still working as a midwife she regularly worked the Saturday/Sunday overnight shift. About the only freebie she ever got out of the NHS was that they paid an extra hour's pay when the clocks went back, and didn't deduct an hour when they went forward. Didn't make up for the feeling when the clock went back at 2 am and they realised they'd got an extra hour to survive till 8am

During the corresponding switch in Autumn, any such oversight was prevented by writing in large letters that an additional hour was due.

And somewhere there will be an occasionally used timepiece which escapes the change altogether until a few weeks of months pass.

Not to mention the cryptic instructions for the cycle computers if you can find them. These days I refuse to change them at all.

Another week and we put our clocks back: an even greater time spread to remember when calling the Old Dart.

Re adjusting clocks: GPS does such a wonderful job of adjusting this sort of thing that why don't more car manufacturers take advantage of the synergy and link the vehicle clock to the GPS? My motorbike takes its internal clock update from the GPS, the GPS takes the fuel/distance to go from the bike, etc etc. I'll get on the bike on Sunday the 6th and all will be taken care of.

Unlike the PITA to go and adjust the cars along with a bunch of digital clocks around the house :hmm: And the expensive wristwatch that has to be changed carefully so that I don't select the wrong feature, then there's the hot water service clock because the smart meter stays on standard time all year round, before I even begin to think about SWMBOs multitude of clocks and watches ;)

Always amazes me that people complain about this, as it stands we get an extra hour of often lovely evening sunshine in the summer months. If we left things on UTC plus one we would get an extra hour of gloomy depressing drizzle ridden evening in November . Frankly in the UK the winter months are often better in darkness than daylight. If we stayed on UTC 0 then we would have summer sunshine at 0330 when hardly anyone is up and the evenings would be too short.
Is it such a hard thing to do , alter the clocks? after all out US cousins manage it even tho' some think it is a work of the devil and as a nation they are not known for understanding and adapting such measures are they.

Yes it is a hard thing to do - physically alter the clocks - why not leave them unchanged and just pronounce on one Sunday: from Monday working hours will be 0700-1600 or whatever. And when you change, working hours will be 0800-1700.

When I lived in Germany I remember being told that the time adjustment of all public clocks under authority of the state in Hessen alone cost around DM80.000, twice a year. That includes overtime payments for Sundays.

I can think of better ways to spend DM 160.000 (which is €80.000).

The US has been on summer time since the start of March, so that's three weeks of interim schedules.

I remember many years ago changing to BST, flying to Boston, then changing to summer time again a week later. So one forward, six back, one forward.

What happens when you chaps fly over the date line? does the captain announce the change of day to the punters in back?

Having done this a few days ago, the time and date at destination were both mentioned on departure and during the chat after landing while taxiing to the terminal. There was no specific announcement as we crossed the date line itself, and I'd argue that while in the air, passengers aren't that bothered by it, they just need to be able to interact with the outside world again on arrival.

It is arguable that GMT has the sun pretty well at the zenith at noon in the UK. So for the UK, 'GMT' (or now UTC) is 'God's time'......I can just accept BST for summer, but why all the year?

So those of a religious bent should oppose it....

Then they say use European time all the year because 'it makes it easier to deal with Europe'. Get your ar*se out of bed earlier if you deal with Europe - being an hour earlier makes it much harder to deal with California and the rest of the world! Such Fun !

UTC ... I've read that in the Dark Ages, when time and navigation were being invented, the British and French scientists were in disagreement ( what's new ? ) as to where the zero Meridian should be placed, Greenwich and Paris being the contenders. The Brits won, but the French wouldn't accept it (what's new ? ) and maintained Parisian Standard Time, i.e. 6 seonds earlier then GMT - until the Space Age, when they had to fall in line with the invention of Universal Co-ordinated Time - or UTC in the French.

These super duper self adjusting clocks can cause problems.
A mate went on self catering holiday to Cypress a few years back.
His missus packed their super spiffy self adjusting alarm clock. Having arrived at the villa they set the alarm to local time manually and went off on the town.
They'd set the alarm to go off at 08:00 but the thing went off at what they discovered was about 05:00 local and the clock had reset itself to UTC.
Took them a couple of days to discover that the BBC has masts at the base at Akrotiri which broadcasts the Zulu time signal. It doesn't affect local clocks but as theirs was bought in the UK.....

If anything, being on GMT as opposed to CET gives the UK an advantage when dealing with the US, because there's a bit more overlap. This is even more important when dealing with California (as a lot of tech companies do) because 4pm in the UK is 5pm in Germany and 8am in California, so for meetings either one lot has to get up early or the other lot has to stay late.

In that context, being an hour adrift of most of Europe is an insignificant issue.

Once suggested that if it was a birthday then make the most of it, as in about 3 hours time we would be passing into tomorrow, and that would be the end of it. Shortly after a stewardess appeared with a birthday card - for a female passenger - that the crew had cobbled up on the back of a First Class menu ( about A4 size in those days, on some sort of posh vellum type paper ) and then all signed, they required the Captains' signature before presenting it.

I refused, until I'd seen the passenger, bring her up. A few minutes later this vision appeared at the flight deck door and announced "Hello, I'm XXXX"

We got married 4 months later.

What a great story, ExSp33db1rd.

Ever notice that, no matter how carefully you go round changing clocks, there's one that eludes you until about a week later? It's usually the car with me, but I did that yesterday, so summat else will be lurking.

Daylight savings is a comercial plot by paint and curtain makers. The extra hour of daylight makes things fade much quicker. And dont get me strated on the chooks n cows..:ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh:

If only France had remembered to return to CET-1 in 1945, and Spain had done the same in 1975, then they'd all be closer to solar time.

If Scotland becomes independent, CET-2 might even be possible for the UK, avoiding many people both having dark-to-work and dark-coming-home days in the winter.

Personally, being a night persom, I'd be happy if the sun didn't come up until about 1300, then stay daylight unrtil 0500

Or just rename BST to British Standard Time ;)

Sounds good - gets my vote.

They'd set the alarm to go off at 08:00 but the thing went off at what they discovered was about 05:00 local and the clock had reset itself to UTC

Er, If it reset itself to UTC wouldn't it have gone off at 11:00 local (UTC+3)?

Maybe it reset the alarm time to 0000 too?

That might go the right way for the tale, although it seems an odd thing for a clock radio designer to do.

Well, all my DAB+ radios and internet connected devices all reset themselves. Now if they could only teach the oven and the washing machine (both quite modern) to do the same.

Don't ask me why the washing machine needs a clock, the old one worked very well when you told it to turn itself on in 3 hours time.

So she can set her alarm to get up and make your breakfast. And why does she have to turn herself on? :E

Add something like this alongside, with a hanging tag about the extra hour.

I notice the shadow of the dial isn't parallel to the other two shadows, so maybe it's a few minutes fast.

I see you're budding, BTW.

This makes it a bit hard to decide if changing the clocks is a good or bad thing.
