View Full Version : Quote button, smiley & icon failure

Someone noted this a couple of days ago, but because it didn't affect me - then - I failed to take note.

Since day 1 on PPRuNe I've contributed to earlier posts by occasionally copying previous comments into my answer, then used the "Wrap (QUOTE) tags around selected text" button, i.e the one to the left of the # mark, 3 in from the right, that puts the text in a blue box - as everyone else does.

As of two days ago this has stopped happening, the QUOTE button is dead.

WTF ??

Could be a javascript failure. If I block scripts from the page then the icon tools don't work.

Bushfiva - I know, it seems to be working for everyone else, so what am I doing wrong - suddenly ?

Llondel - How might that have happened, I'm not aware of having denied Java anything recently, and more to the point - how do I change anything that I might have inadvertently touched, now?

Thanks.

Have you updated your browser or using a different browser? I can reproduce your problem in IE11. The smilies don't work either, right?

WTF ??

The above done by clicking on "Reply" in the post you want to quote (in this case your post). Then in the address bar that appears on the "Reply To Thread" page - http://www.pprune.org/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=8339945&noquote=1 - delete the number 1 at the end of the address and then click return. The quote will appear in its entirety already formatted. You can then delete any part of the quote that you don't want to appear. When your post and quote appear on the thread page the name of the person quoted appears automatically together with a http://www.pprune.org/images/buttons/viewpost.gif (http://www.pprune.org/computer-internet-issues-troubleshooting/534861-quote-button-failure.html#post8339945) after the name. Clicking this takes you to the quoted post in the thread.

Thanks, I'll give it a go next time I want it.

Henry - [ ] { } ( ) all work if I type them in from the keyboard, the problem is with the Quote button on the taskbar, it was previously only necessary to highlight the previous text, then hit the button, which doesn't actually use brackets, but highlights the text on a blue background - now it ain't working as in the past, and as appears to still do for everyone else.

Speedbird - the reason I type direct in forum code using [ ] is that it always works, whether I plug in a keyboard or whether I use my big fingers on a tiny seven inch touchscreen. It is also easier to cascade commands like center, image, color, size, bold etc.

Similar reasoning to typing in HTML when making a webpage - no assist needed. Stand alone, stand tall.

Anyone else not have a quote button, multi quote button, quick reply button etc to reply to posts on pprune?

Most forums I go on have all these.

I only have a reply button, would like to have the quote button and have asked the administrators about it but they're pretty much no help at all. :ugh:

This one has too - it is in the editor panel.

BOAC quote: "This one has too - it is in the editor panel."

Nope!

Looked at the help page and the stuff below, I have no quick reply button, no quick editor box etc.

"As a registered user you can go to a forum on a board where you have permission to view threads and leave replies. To reply you have a few options. You can click on the 'Post Reply' button Post Reply and add a new post to the end of the thread. Alternatively, you can leave a quick reply in a quick editor box listed below the posts in the thread.

When using 'Quick Reply' you can choose to quote a particular post if you are replying to something someone wrote. You may need to click the quick reply button Quick Reply in a post to activate the quick reply box before you can type into it.

If you want to post replies to multiple posts you can select them by clicking the multi quote button Multi quote. This button will change to indicate that you've selected it. Clicking post reply will then bring you to the full editor with all the posts quoted." :ugh:

I for one is grateful there is no quote button. Far to many people have the habit of quoting the entire post they are responding to leading to a bloody mess of a thread.

Having to cut and paste the bits that are relevant to quote cuts down on that nonsense.

Not Nightowl, what editor are you using?

You need to check you are using the Standard Editor:

User CP\Edit Options\Miscellaneous Options\Message Editor Interface\Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls

Clicking this takes you to the quoted post in the thread.

Gawd!! Brilliant! The above worked as advertised, thanks!!

Make that two!

Some forums/fora are a pain to try and read, where damn near every post, sometimes just a few words, is dwarfed by the quote, usually of the previous post.

Tried the above Saab Dastard, my setting is as above.

Not to confuse you now I did a trick that Democritus suggested being;

The above done by clicking on "Reply" in the post you want to quote (in this case your post). Then in the address bar that appears on the "Reply To Thread" page - http://www.pprune.org/newreply.php?d...9945&noquote=1 - delete the number 1 at the end of the address and then click return. The quote will appear in its entirety already formatted. You can then delete any part of the quote that you don't want to appear. When your post and quote appear on the thread page the name of the person quoted appears automatically together with a after the name. Clicking this takes you to the quoted post in the thread.

It works! ???? Go figure. :hmm: Thanks anyway.

Nope, works for me.

Which browser? Have you tried a different one to see?
I have no problem in Firefox. I'll wander over and try Chrome.

Interesting ... this is Chrome, which has dropped the original quote but kept my addition.

I'm using Firefox, and have been for a few months, my "quote button" failure only started recently - and persists.

Can I suggest you clear the browser cache? Not cookies, cache.

I've notice this of late too. I've managed to still quote someone by using the "Switch Editor Mode" feature in the top right corner of the message box. For some reason, quoting someone in the one mode works, whilst in the other it does not. I'm not 100% sure which mode is which, but when I have a cream background and typing, I cannot quote; when I have a white background and typing, I can. I'm using the dreaded Internet Explorer 11.

Plugins, particularly adblockers, can cause this quote button failure as well as deprecate other site functions. They're just not very good at telling what's an ad and what's a site feature.

That's it !!!!

Thank you, disabled Adblock 2.5.1 and back to normal, so now I have to make a choice ! Do I want Ads. or a Quote button !

Doesn't answer the question tho' - why did Adblock suddenly start to do that, it had been installed sometime ago ?

No matter, problem solved.

Adblock 2.5.1 has no deleterious effect for me. It's down to how you set it up.

Like AV programs, the blocking lists get updated from time to time.

They work fine on my IPhone and IPad but here on my new notebook and its predecessor they don't. I have read the FAQ's but I am still having no joy.

Any help gratefully received.
