Any thoughts? :\:\

It might appeal to the new generation of geeks but for an old fart like me it's more likely to send me to sleep! Too long and too kitsch. I give it a 3 out of 10. ;)

I could learn to hate that, fairly quickly I think.

I understand the airlines desire to try to get people to actually watch the video but at what point does the information needed become so deeply hidden within the "action" that it becomes almost invisible? At least with the more common dry style of delivery, some of the important stuff might be registering with those not paying attention, albeit unconsciously.

Make the videos short, sharp and to the point. Oh...and relevant to the actual aircraft environment! Not a beach. Not a car. Not a hallucinogenic drug trip. An aircraft! We apparently want people to take safety seriously. You'd never guess it from the above.

Or am I just too old now to get it? :{

If KLM CityHopper can do a safety briefing 'the old way' in about 1min:30secs, why do long-haul carriers persist in thinking we need 5-8 minutes plus of them trying to outdo each other using gimmicky videos?

In the film above, it took 54 seconds before the Aisles Clear safety message was complete and 1min 38 seconds until Seatbelt Operation was finished. That's just two of the required key safety messages after nearly two minutes...

Awful.

That's all.

… and both of these likely should have been completed before they even started the film.

Wonder how the colour blind, the deaf and the blind will cope with this.

Just terrible - no redeeming features. The comments above have most it and I note that they managed to cram 60% of the information into 35 seconds (starting 4:40) Could they not manage that with the rest?

I was searching for one of the smiley icons from the panel to insert but none of them can convey the inanity, stupidy, short sightedness of this . I look forward to hearing the views of C.C.

If I was a VS share holder, I'd want the manager who signed off on this to pay all the costs out of their own pocket.

It was boring, even the stupidity and mixed scenarios could not keep me watching. They can try and tell a story but you can't be changing locale, accent, style, music and mode of transport every thirty seconds. They might think that the younger generation want to have that but I doubt they do.

It was vague "Some of the chutes can be used as life rafts" So - what about the ones on THIS aircraft?? We all want to save money but making one video to cover every flight is not a good plan.

We all want to save money and using cartoons is much cheaper than real aircraft and actors (or staff) but, "If you want to open the door move the big handle" is illustrated by something from Sgt. Pepper???? WHAT DOES THE BLÖÔDY HANDLE LOOK LIKE YOU MORONS??? Show me an actual cabin, O2 mask etc. By the way - did you notice that the driver of the car put his own O2 mask on WHILST DRIVING? :=

Insulting: What's with the stupid voices? :*

I say all of the above with saddness as VS has been a favourite of mine for years but this is just trying to be too clever for it's own good. Write this off and back to basics.

Another excellent reason for me never to fly Virgin Atlantic.

That is just ghastly. I just dread to think how much money they paid some hip people somewhere in a trendy part of London to come up with that !

A quick google gives the following rubbish....

The airline has retold its in-flight safety video through a range of genres, starting with Spaghetti Westerns running through to super-hero films, referencing Brief Encounter, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and The Beatles’ animated classic Yellow Submarine. British comedienne Morgana Robinson provides the voice over for each scene, using different accents depending on the genre. Creative agency : Art & Graft
(quote from brand republic)

Art & Graft ? More like Clart & Daft.

You can read more about how they wasted the best part of a year on it (they started work on the drivel in July 2013 !) ... here (http://www.shots.net/news/article/83238/virgin-are-in-safe-hands-with-art-%2526-graft)

There's a quote from a Virgin middle manager in that article that calls the video
an exciting concept with a style that managed to convey warmth and familiarity, whilst feeling fresh, edgy and contemporary

Someone pass me the sick bag from their seat pocket.... :yuk:

From another article (design week)....

One scene that ended up being cut was an animation of Richard Branson as a roaring lion, as a parody of the MGM opening credits. Branson agreed but MGM’s lawyers vetoed the idea.

Thank god for MGM's lawyers !

It looks and sounds like one of those 'Emperor's new Clothes' projects.

Once a certain amount of time and effort and cash have gone into it - no one has the b@@ls to call time on it. These projects sometimes start out OK - but then folks get carried away. You see this problem emerge when software is first specified and then new requests change it until the original function is lost. (this is just one simple example)

But the next round it to try to win awards with it ...

Is this for real ?

Terrible, gimmicky, unclear - shouldn't be allowed.

I'm very surprised they got it approved by the CAA. In a way it's quite cool and stylish viewed as an advert for Virgin's safety standards on the first viewing, but it's far too long and far too confusing as a safety brief in itself.

As a regular flyer with a professional focus on safety, even I lost the message halfway through and couldn't pick up on the really important bits, embedded as they were in some wierd VA / Hollywood themed corporate advert.

I like cartoons, always have always will.
At 45 seconds into this one I was clicking it off.

The old adage about people having an attention spam of about two minutes is true :bored: And it's far less than that unless you keep them interested completely. In most situations there is a direct personal benefit to paying attention- work or school training for example where you desire to learn and know deeply. Since there are almost no times a person will need to know this kind of thing, most people pay little attention to it from the start because they don't see a direct benefit :ooh: And animation may be fun, but people pay more attention to people unless they like to learn from animation- those being the minority.

I often think these safety videos would do better if they started with a "faces of death" sort of scenario showing what happens to those who didn't pay attention but of course the airlines wouldn't want pax thinking that they might actually have to use this knowledge so therein lies the rub. Not that it bothers me- Darwin Awards will eventually come to those who pay no heed to safety warnings and I have no problem with that :E

How do you best teach uninterested pax this stuff without scaring them right off the plane? I don't know that answer but I do know that you need to keep it short, simple, and keep their attention. This vid fails all of these.

A question. Is regulatory approval required for these? Is there a criteria for approval by, for example the CAA or FAA?

I much prefer the Fly Dubai version as they get all the right messages across while managing to cover just about every variation in the panoply of Middle Eastern dress and religious styles.

^ I still wonder if it is really a good idea to make safety briefings into cutesy entertainment, but that one is FAR better!

One point is glosses over somewhat is doing up and undoing seat belts. Most people are used to those in cars which work differently and some people do get confused with those in aircraft; I think a closer and longer shot of the buckle, showing its operation clearly, would be better.

DlyDubai is vertainly better than the VS and may be the best compromise that can be made in the region. However, when it came to the O2 masks - they showed their three 'main' pax reach for the mask but NOT putting them, perhaps because they are wearing a visor and would have to move it. Understandable.

Yet, I still think there is a lot to be said for humans doing the full 'dance' and talk.

It's an innovative approach where after every emergency the professional members on here repeat time and time again that people don't pay attention to the current announcements.

It would be interesting to know if the airlines have done some research on the effectiveness of these videos (I'm guessing that they must have).

Indeed, davidjpowell. We also see the results in news reports. Now that any evacuation (precautionary or emergency) is recorded on camera phones etc, we see pax carrying all many of items including max sized carry on bags.

We have discussed that topic in here and concluded that the CC at the evac door would have no choice but to let the pax take the items with them - as wrestling them away to put on a growing pile would delay matters further.

We also hear from the professionals that, if there is need (and time) time for a restatement of the demo - that everyone listens very carefully. So, one might conclude that, it doesn't matter What or How you put it - they don't listen.
