AFP: Cathay Pacific orders 21 Boeing 777-9X planes (http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jMmFgqRVVLuwG-FyIQsLB5LzkPtg?docId=828b642c-316e-462e-8f8e-b476ed6c2245)

I guess placing the 777-9x on long, high capacity routes with lots of cargo to replace 747-400s?

after Emirates ordered 117 Boeing 777 9x.

On top of all the other 777 8s and Airbus aircraft.

Kind of puts Asia in perspective by 2020.

looking more like the end of the line for the 747 with all these orders , sad to see, but thats progress.

I wonder how many at the end of the -300ER delivery list will be converted to -9Xs??

BC,

I don't think any will be converted. CX needs every 77W it can get its hands on, and the 777X is a long ways off.

bvcu,

I don't think this order closes the door on the Intercontinental, but it is certainly another step in that direction.

Time will tell cxorcist.

The last of the ERs is due around 2019/20 I think give or take, and the first 9X is supposed to be 2021. Add the inevitable delay, let's call it 2022. Assuming Boeing wouldn't build a new variant unless it had a significant improvement, I would guess that CX would love to convert some of their last ERs to 9Xs, but it all depends upon the time frame of the development programme.

Think it depends more on timing of 3rd runway.

I think it depends largely on the A350's performance and actual delivery schedule.

I could see CX ordering more 77Ws as the prices go down in anticipation of the 777X. Notice how CX scooped up some of the last 744ERFs and continues to take delivery of A330s.

Actually as far as I know, the last of the 777-300ERs are due to be delivered in early 2015. Fleet expansion will be with the A350 thereafter. There will be no further 77W deliveries after that until the 777X, unless we order more. 777F may happen if we firm up the options.
