Goose Bay - anything to do?

Well, is there actually anything to do out there to pass the time or is it as bad as everyone makes out?

You could go down to the local trash dump after a night in town and watch the bears come to play and retrieve their dinner.

Also, practice aero dynamic breaking (opening doors of mini bus/transport at right time- needs a number of crew for maximun effect) when arriving back at mess after 'another' night out or post trash dump trip.

Trick is to 'coast' to said alloted parking bay and full stop outside quarters without aid of engine from said marker upon road!

A trip to 'Trappers Cabin' is not to be missed. It's the best bar for 500 miles! The buy a raw steak and slap it on the grill meal is good value - providing you don't forget about your steak. No refunds for cremation.

Avoid 'Ladies night' on Tuesdays - very scary! :eek:

Flatus V, they went south along with the KC-135s . . . and that was an awfully long time ago! Were you one of the fortunate few who experienced being blissfully trapped in the schoolie block during a prolonged Phase 3 blizzard, per chance? :p

They had some paintball gear which was good for a laugh when we went there. We also went bear watching at the dump. Standard rules were that as soon as you saw a bear on NVG's, then one of the non NVG equipped blokes had to get out and run around the van as quickly as possible. The bears sound really close when you can't see them!!
We also hired a Twin Otter and pilot and flew to a place called Riglolet to go Whale Watching - awesome as the guys there use boats not much larger than a fishing dinghy and get really close to some pretty big bruising whales.
There are also numerous opportunities to go out to fishing lodges for a few days of seclusion and big fish (don't forget to take beer). Also there is a boat club there belonging to the RAF where you can take out ski boats etc but far better is to hire out the place for an evening BBQ and booze up which gets you away from the strip for a night.
We had a pretty good time there, but if you are into the clubbing scene it may not be the place for you. If you don't mind slamming a load of beers and being inventive then you will be fine.

When I was a knocker, I was posted there for 14 months and I have to say that it was the best tour that I ever did, no work, major social life, top shags (The're not all mooses), 3 months in Vegas........didn't want to come home.......so went aircrew instead!

In the winter... if the alcohol dont frazzle ya brain the unending bar chat about winter sports (and the injuries inflicted) will drive ya insane.
The permanent staff become like a bunch of redneck inbreds, always just a little too friendly as they edge closer to associate with someone from the outside world.
Leisure activities include eating, drinking, eating, drinking...oh! and watching the riviting winter sports.:eek:

Just got back from a quick trip there....went downtown to the hotel.....waded through an unseasonal blizzard to Trappers and had an excellent steak. We got away 5 mins early too..

Now that was in the days when we stayed in the blue painted blocks on the other side and had to get a Taxi to go to the action was it not. The Goose Hilton had only just started to sink into the permafrost.
