View Full Version : When is a free trade agreement - NOT!

When Australian leaders sign one with Thailand.

Proof that Australia is lead by morons who either don't understand , or a treasonous. The FREE TRADE AUTOMOTIVE agreement with Thailand. We have no tariffs on cars built in Thailand so we imported 200,000 cars from Thailand in 2012. Yet, Thailand sees fit to apply a 50% "excise" on cars built in Australia. In 2012 we exported the grand total of...........100 cars. That's right...100 cars. This is an agreement our leaders sighed. No wonder the rest of the world thinks we are damn stupid.

It's not just us, other western countries seem to have this blight where their leaders seem more concerned with fostering development in other countries not their own.

What makes politicians so keen to sacrifice their own constituents.

Ah... but I bet in return the Thais have slashed taxes/duties to zero on a whole range of products, like rice, prawns, pork, chicken.

It's just unfortunate that they are about world's nbr 1 or 2 in production of all the above and at hugely competitive prices.

p.s. Lest anyone suggest specialist knowledge, I was accompanied by my wife and younger daughter when I bought my Patong T-shirt http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/src:www.pprune.org/get/images/smilies/smile.gif

Is that cause you not safe to be allowed out on your own ?

As a rule though, we do not seem to make the best agreements,
from Military contracts to FTA's.

I think the next free trade agreement should be based on compatibility - not proximity. Seems to me a Commonwealth free trade agreement might work well (with a few countries excepted). Might actually promote relationships that deserve to be nourished and might re-build some merchant marines.

That's a bit harsh, Mr Chips!

It's not perfect but it's far from the unintelligible you seem to suggest.

Vulcanised I think it is fair to say that when criticising others and calling them "morons" you really should check what you type.
