In its ongoing quest to attract direct international services, a delegation from Canberra has held meetings with Singapore Airlines and its owner, the Singapore government, to attract the carrier to the region.

According to a report in The Canberra Times, deputy chief minister Andrew Barr and Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron visited Singapore earlier this month to press their claim for direct flights using the region’s significant catchment area and demonstrated existing demand via Sydney as lures.

It would save all the politicians having to connect through Sydney for international travel and with the high speed rail link on the way it could be a quicker option for some people in Sydney.

The best thing about landing in Canberra is that it is only a 30 km drive to get to Australia........:p

I was on a fully loaded BA747 that went to Singapore last year, customs from SYD came down to clear us via the RAAF apron given the aircraft wouldn't fit on the domestic side

suspect any flights out of CBR would be back of clock to SIN like flights out of BNE.

This would also give Sydney pax more options timewise.

About seven years ago Air Pacific operated CBR - NAN flights for a couple of months over a winter, apart from the odd charter I think that has been it

heard that CBR is working on NZ to fly CBR/AKL.

Makes sense & with no curfew at CBR that could operate red-eyes out of CBR. Not sure what time the last SYD/AKL operates in the eveing but it must be around 1800, which means check in at 1600 & leave whatever (business meeting etc.) by 1400, which stuffs up the day. A short hop SYD/CBR or BWU/CBR to connect to AKL flight departing at 2359 would have you arriving in AKL early but not in the dark !!!

Would people really want to take a red-eye service to AKL? JQ is the only one that currently goes on MEL-AKL which gets around 5am, they constantly have this flight on sale.

Last NZ flight from SYD is NZ108 at 1840 with an 2340 arrival in AKL.

if a Kiwi in SYD or CBR for business then don't want to be cutting work day short to suit schedules.

You'd think most people would rather get a red eye than have to spend another night in a hotel + airlines would probably have spare aircraft for flights at that time.

Corporate bosses don't want staff staying in hotels anymore than they have to. Nothing to do with cost, but rather marriage problems.

Better to have day off when return to NZL than to stay in a hotel overnight & waste another day in OZ due to time differences.

Business types don't fly JQ unless no other option.

RE: AKL-CBR

I had a chat with Chris Luxon after the NZ AGM last year and he told me an AKL-CBR flight is not viable for them as their bookings on connecting flights are only around 10 per day. So there is not even enough PAX to fill a Beech on that route!
