Huey Helicopter Knocked Off Trailer On Way To Tulsa Veterans Day Parade

TULSA, Oklahoma - A fully-restored military helicopter has been damaged in transport Monday morning on the IDL in Tulsa. The Huey helicopter was knocked off a trailer after hitting a sign on southbound Highway 75.
The helicopter is on the highway at the IDL bridge. Railing wreckage from the walkway installed under the Joplin-1st Street sign is wrapped around the rotor of the helicopter.

News On 6 is told the Vietnam-era helicopter was on its way from the Tulsa Air and Space Museum to the Veterans Day parade that begins at 11 a.m.

The helicopter is believed to be one Vietnam Veteran Hobie Hammond acquired within the past six months. It was decommissioned in Arkansas for display to TASM.

Hammond is a 70-year-old former Huey helicopter pilot.

According to this old manual (granted, for a UH-1B) (http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/16/t/90154.aspx) the clearance from ground to the front tip of a tied down MR Blade is 18' 9.54". Mast height is 12' 8.5". The overpass clearance says 15.0'. Give at least two feet of height to the lorry bed and this load was trouble on wheels.

Dear Sir....please to remember Army Warrant Officer Helicopter Pilots get to remain Age Nineteen for Life.....as that is about equal to our Mental Maturity Level.

Actually, looking at the photo....that would be an "Old Guy" during my days flying in the Army.

Accidents happen, in every walk of life. Like any accident there's going to be a chain of variables that just all lined up to cause that spill. If it was my aircraft I know I wouldn't trust anybody else to secure it to the easy ride flat bed. No matter whose responsibility it actually was. Knowing how perfection orientated aircraft restoration guys are I bet they wouldn't either.The Huey will miss a couple of shows but i'm sure NorthWestern helicopters will have it back to specs within a week of it hitting their shop floor.
