Numbers game

I would interested to hear peoples comments on the number of application forms that companies send out. Presumably a lot of CVs are rejected and get the standard thanks but no thanks. Can you assume anything from the fact that you have received an application form (eg in with a good chance of getting an interview ). What is your personal experience. Have you filled in lots of application forms and had only a few or even no interviews or is there a closer correspondence between the number of application forms and interviews.

I'm not looking for hard facts just your perception based on experience.
