I seem to recall when installing ME that I checked an option somewhere enabling fast shutdown. I've tried reinstalling and checked everywhere but can't seem to reverse this action. Problem I have is it always seems to take a couple of goes go get the computer up and running. I can only conclude it doesnt like the way it is being shutdown.

Any ideas?

The "Disable Fast Shutdown" option is not available in Win98 SE or Win ME. These programs were changed to incorporate the driver disablement as the default on shutdown

The link Icarus provides has not been responding so I don't know what it says. I may be wrong but I think that the fast shutdown options are the same (enabled/disabled) in Win98 and Win98 SE, only the default setting has changed. See

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q202633

for instructions on disabling fast shutdown in Win98. I don't have ME in front of me now so I can't check if applicable in ME. The analogous ME shutdown problem troubleshooting page,

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q273746 ,

doesn't mention it but it might be worth trying the Win98 directions. If that fails then see what the registry data value is for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Shutdown

Other ME shutdown problems and possible solutions are discussed here:

Tried all links but can't find anything specific to my problem. What happens is when I start the computer it says a previous attempt to start windows was unsuccessful and goes to safe mode. Safe mode then wont start because it says files are missing. Power off power on and on 3rd attempt always starts with no problems. Is the same every day. The restart feature causes no problems. Weird. Though it could be a virus but same prob after a reformat and fresh install.
