View Full Version : Tablets emit toxic light

I saw this display of screen covers on sale in the computer department of my local Carrefour this morning. News to me that some tablets emit toxic light. But if the light is also addictive, that would explain why people rush out and buy products starting with the letter "i".

We all know that light is a form of electro magnetic radiation and that at certain energy and frequency levels it can be hazardous (vide ulra violet and into the X Ray spectra and, of course, we don't want to mess with gamma rays) but methinks our i fetish and equipment is unlikely to produce anything like this. I wait to be enlightened (ahem)!

Wasn't there a rush yonks ago to fit screens over the old CRT
monitors? I seem to recall some were even electrically connected
to the computer.

Old gimmic being replaced by an i-age one?:suspect:

Worked with an electronics company, many moons ago, that used those filters. They maintained they reduced the build up of static electricity around the old 3270 (think Russian telly) monitors used then and were thus suited for use near the micro circuits under fabrication. Was never sure they had any effect at all but, hey ho, I was apt to listen to my elders and betters at the time.

If the light is "toxic" then the only way to block it is to not see it. A piece of cardboard will do.

Ultra violet light... can permanently damage your eye sight. Effectively can cause burning but is not toxic per se.

Yes, in the 80's and early 90's, sold bucket loads of the screens.
Mesh things, often with a wire and a clip out of the side, might
have been to earth it or something.

I worked with a woman who was pregnant in mid 80's. She wore a lead apron when working at the green CRT terminal.

What a nincompoop. You'd have thought she would have felt heavy enough already! My mother smoked Lucky Strike cigarettes while pregnant with me. I maintain it had not effect on me whatsoever! ;)

Dunno about toxic, but check out 'blue light' and its adverse effects on melatonin secretion. :8

Blue light has a dark side - Harvard Health Publications (http://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletters/Harvard_Health_Letter/2012/May/blue-light-has-a-dark-side/)

Looks like among other things they are blaming students' lack of motivation to lack of sleep owing to too much blue morning light stimulation from cell phone screens during the night.

This one did make me smile. Out of the frying pan and into the fire ?

I wonder if she gave the baby brain damage or if it affected it at all
as lead is know to do.

She wore a lead apron

Whenever anyone has an Xray the quack goes to
great length to explain the procedure is safe and
the radiation dosage will be absolutely minimal.

There's a pat on one's shoulder accompanied by
an assuring "Trust me...there is nothing to worry
about sir."

Then he and the bloody nurse immediately leave
the room and hide behind a thick shielding while
the zapping is carried out.

I have specifically been told that having too many X rays is not good for your health.

I am no expert so have never checked but I wouldn't be standing next to a machine every time it took one.

Just my HO.

No, by choice and didn't meet the right person BUT I also decided very early on that I didn't think marriage and kids were for me.

Plus I wanted to go and fight a war but was in the military during the great Peace era. Left before the regular SF unit was raised and Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan occurred.

Yes you are, and no, there isn't.

I have a qualified team of nerds looking into the subject of "toxic light" - which they thought was some kind of diet beer - and they will report back later, however they suggest to be really safe, use aluminum cooking foil placed across the screen for the time being.....
