If i had a FAA CPL and i came to the uk , would i have to do the initial class 1 medical , or would i have to do a renewal ? , would this renewal be done with my local AME ? or would i have to go to gatwick ? anybody out there ever done this ? if so any any advice would be appreciated !

The CAA told me that it would be a renewal the first one would have to be done at gatwick cost is 189 pounds and renewal limits not initial limits apply.

I did mine last year. I initially thought it would be a full class one, but on producing my FAA CPL & Class 1 ,was told I only had to do an 'extended renewal' which cost approx 189 quid.

No chest x-ray or 'strobe light' test (can't remember exact name of it  )

The results were back within 2 weeks.

crispy banana ,

how many hours did you have when you went for your medical ? and did you intend to fly commercially in the uk ?

I had about 300 total and the FAA CPL/IR/ME.....

Am currently doing the ATPL's distance learning (BGS) and one day :) will make it home!!! (Ireland :D )

I did the class 1 to make sure I passed before investing all that dough for the JAA licence!

Hi,

I passed my initial JAR Class one medical examination one week ago. I have an eye which exceeds a little the limit, so the doctors must discuss about my case. I will have the answer in 4 weeks.

If I'll not have my JAR class one, and if I'll go to the USA and come back with an FAA CPL, what will occur? Could I pass an 'extended renewal' (with the renewal limits)?

Thanks in advance and excuse me for my bad english :D

I went for a class 1 in october 2001 and failed because of a lazy eye
In january 2002 the new proposals came through and I spoke to the CAA and they said I would now pass a renewal but not an initial, and if I had a Foreign CPL I would be treated as a renewal.
So I now have an FAA CPL and a CAA class one, but it is a very expensive way to get the medical, although my FAA CPL could well be useful sometime.

Hope this helps

flyingfrenchboy ,

Did you get the results back from your medical yet ?

how much were you over the limits ?

did you tell them when you booked your medical or did you just turn up on the day and chance your arm ?

Hi,

I phoned to te CAA few minutes ago to have the results... And they gave me a wonderful news: I have my class one !!

basketeer : Before book an apointment, I faxed them my spectacles prescription which was weaker than my real sight, therefore they answered me that it was ok for the class one. But, on the examination day, the optometrist found that:

Right eye: -4,25
Left eye: -5,25

See u "soon" at FL450 ;)

Flyingfenchboy ,

Tell me , when you arrived at the medical , did you then tell them or did you just wait until they figured it out ?

Hi,

Dumpertruck, I didn't tell them, just because I didn't know that my spectacles prescription was weaker than my real sight: I discovered it at Gatwick during my class one examination.

Can I just check if a basic FAA single engine CPL is okay for the revalidation JAA Class 1 conversion? Looks as though that’s the way I will have to go.:(

And, another thing, has anyone tried a legal challenge to the JAA standards? It screams ridiculous that FAA pilots fly overhead us every day without meeting our European friends standards, yet we are deemed unsafe

Long final there is no such thing as an FAA "initial" every exam has the same standards

what follows is a list of all FAA Ame's in the UK, it follows the format; Ame #, name + address, no Phone no's but it should be easy enough to find.

here is the link if you want to search yourself.
