catseye,

That's a surprising list mainly for the machines that aren't there: only a few interstate assets by the look of it?

Stay safe, but please keep off my TV set during the news. It upsets the dog, don't y'know :p

And John, this is the the third year cycle yet again. I like most taxpayers around the country are well sick of these leafy gum dwellers and their green party aficionados, who don't do hazard reduction burns yet expect the taxpayer out there to pay for helicopters wall to wall to save them when there is a wall of fire against them. I quite candidly have had enough, I suffer daily from the Labor party Live ex ban, the country is in dire straits financially from our several years of Rudd / Gillard mismanagement. Iit is about time the insurance companies weighed in and said: No Hazard Reduction, No Pay Out. It is also about time the Govt. of the day, state or federal, forced the hazard reduction legislation. it can be done. - very easily. - .very very easily, just a matter of standing up to the very samll minority who like to rule the media -- bugger 'em.

A CRUCIAL water bombing helicopter was grounded during the NSW bushfire crisis because authorities claimed it needed an American crew to operate it.

The state-of-the-art Erickson skycrane was sitting at Bankstown Airport with The Sunday Telegraph told it required special engineers and staff to get it off the ground.

But last night, in an unusual twist, the chopper was authorised to fly to Springwood, despite the absence of the US crew.

they've had a busy year in California as well

Nope....aside from the Rim fire, so far this has been one of the slowest year for fires in California in many years that I can remember anyway. We have had fires, but nothing really where we were stretched thin.

Replacement aircraft can only dump 300 litres of water. Shouldn't that be 3000 litres of water or are Robbie's the only thing available?

Love the media.

log0008 the info comes from a friend when he gets around to forwarding it. Not avbl on public website that I know of.

JE yep good to see the interstate machines including the mexicans. THink Kestrel have both their B412 and B212 working. Thought the 212 was on contract in png but maybe they go another one.

Believe most of the houses have been lost from ember attack as the council is pretty agressive on buffers etc although some of the gullies generate very strong and fickle winds. And yes National Parks do a lot of strategic aerial ignition particularly to protect Mt Wilson and Mt Tomah. Some days the only protection is concrete.

If you want a good example of a defendable house, Dick Smiths place and hangar are about the best I have seen. Sealable and nothing on the outside to burn. Inside bunker if the top story lights off as well.

Cheers :D

Well, it IS N-registered, so at best would require American LICENSED crew.
As for the "special" Engineers, I guess being qualified and more importantly, being employed by the operator, would qualify them as "special". :D

Sounds like a journalist that is low on column inches and high on verbiage to me.

10000L of water!! Whatever. Even 9000L of water in a crane it won't have any fuel endurance. Journo's forget that aircraft need motion potion to get airborne - they just believe whatever bs the operator spurts out.

With the present on-going crisis and a possible increase in size and intensity why hasn't any large fixed-wing assets been flown in from the Northern Hemisphere over the last few days. The largest could be here overnight

As far as CAsA is concerned with the operation of such equipment, a declaration of a state of emergency should be made by the state and federal Govts which should include sidelining CASA or forcing a fast tracking of approval.

It must take about ~20 years to recover in the Blue Mountains.

Those fires are in exactly the same places in Winmalee, Bells Line, Bilpin etc. as the last time I was there in 1993/94!

I would propose that it is the same cluster as then as well.

Keep up to date here. (http://google.org/crisismap/2013-nsw-bushfires)

via Kingsley:

Looks to me one air crane helicopter costs around $2m per year to lease and operate. If we spent “only” $500m on the ABC instead of a billion a year we could run 250 of these air cranes right now saving people’s homes and lives. I don’t think there is 250 in existence but I am sure the good people at Erickson would be more than happy to build them!

I wonder if the people who have lost their homes would rather we have taxpayers money being spent running Ironman cartoons on ABC 3 for kids in an era of apparent childhood obesity or life saving water bomber air cranes?

RVDT, I was on those fires too.

Recall having a bite of lunch at the big base at Silverdale, thinking that A Certain Company was rorting the system by their pilots leaving the engines running while they sat under a tree having lunch or a nap - and billing the engine time to RFS.:suspect:

Was there myself flying a 206 with Helimuster (remember them?) which was burning and turning for 12 hours one day but I only unstrapped for the odd toilet break.

I'm not sure I'd be enthused to find a drone on the fireline?

that's an oft discussed topic!

Yes it is....and clearly there are ways to cheat the system all over the world.

Kewl video you posted....took me a while to comprehend is was from a drone until I saw the shadow.... (even though you told me..).

I am biased, but I am clearly fascinated by fire...as are some others on Pprune. Obviously I have offered our aircraft to the fire effort in Australia right now...We are sitting doing nothing.

To all those afflicted... I feel for you, hopefully you have "defensible space"... to all the pilots out there.... Don't f*ck up, and go home to your loved ones at the end of the season.....

A Certain Company was rorting the system by their pilots leaving the engines running while they sat under a tree having lunch or a nap - and billing the engine time to RFS

Pretty sure that was policy throughout the whole organisation and all the customers were aware of it.

Then again in those days nobody used to ask "how much" when there was a fire burning and the aircraft were never on any "standing charge" or contract. It evened it out probably to what other operators were charging.

Go ask Erickson how much an S-64 is per hour "ad hoc".

At least you got experienced crews and well equipped aircraft with comms and support in the field thrown in that could actually lift something.

I seem to remember on that fire spending half my time trying to find aircraft from other operators that were either lost (3), or run out of fuel (2), or hit something (2)!

Don't get me started on what a complete and utter waste of time the military was! Sounds like they may have a little issue with the current fires.

E86,

I would have to agree sir.

The ABC in Australia is an absolute disgrace. :ugh::{:=

Like the Sydney Morning Herald...it is a left wing journal publishing uneducated crap.

ABC = Always Broadcasting Communism

SMH = Socialist Morning Herald.

PS - how dumb of the SMH recently attacking the "Sydney Floating Helipad"...when there is already one in the harbour. A joke, and not a good one at that.

PPS - sorry...not on topic...but required comment !

I suppose we could fall back on the totally fair and unbiased Murdoch press after their fair coverage of the recent elections in AUS??? The press where it is more important to tell us about Lindsay Lohan's broken finger nail than to actually discuss meaningful issues.

Let's get back on the topic.
