Go arounds at Dublin

Just wondering does anybody know how many Go Arounds occur on average each year at Dublin and a breakdown of the reasons for them e.g. obstruction on the runway, weather, technical problems (with the plane landing), other reasons.

I have been flying in very regularly for almost 10 years now and experienced my first Go Around recently. I also have an interest in numbers and statistics, hence the question.

Both the cabin and flight crew were excellent in communicating the situation to us and keeping us up-dated and we landed safely on the second attempt. The Go Around was instigated for separation reasons, I guess the plane using the runway ahead of us had either a slow landing or a delay taking off, for whatever reason, which impacted on us.

My question is purely about facts and figures. I am curious, having never experienced one before despite my 10 years flying into Dublin very regularly.

I don't know what the figures are, but all other things being equal, the more intensively a runway is used, the more likely are go-arounds.

For example at Gatwick, which is generally accepted as the world's busiest single-runway airport, roughly 1 in every 250 approaches resulted in a go-around last year.

To quote from their annual report:

"There are a number of reasons for go-arounds but the most common are when arriving aircraft are slow to leave the runway, departing aircraft are slow to roll and when some aircraft are unstable in the final stages of their approach due to adverse weather conditions."

At Dublin, I would expect the incidence of go-arounds to be lower, but the reasons for them to be the same.

I might contact the airport directly but I doubt they will tell me. I looked at their website there was nothing about them there. I looked at Heathrow's or perhaps googled and found some information on theirs.

I thought I would ask here because there are so many folk with wisdom and insight who, like yourself are very helpful, and explain things clearly and with perspective.

I did a stint as a reasonably regular business traveller in Europe for a few years, notching up about 250 flights as SLF. Of those, two were go-arounds, one at Dublin (coincidentally), the other at Berlin Tegel, so 0.8% from that small sample. Both were as a result of an active CuNim directly over the field. In both cases I was rather glad the driver did what he did and went round - I certainly wouldn't have fancied attempting the landing. But then I'm a big girl's blouse....

I must have landed at Heathrow about 400 times in the past ten years. On one occasion, we had a go around because the guy in front hadn't got off the runway, and that's the only time.

Thank you for your replies. I have probably done around 700 flights in the last ten years, so I guess statistically I was due one.

I just hope they don't come like the buses in '3's. I am flying again tomorrow evening and Monday.

I did a lot of Gatwick --> Dublin business flights a few years ago, and had two go-arounds. Seemed quite a high rate, given that all my other flying has resulted in one g-a at Gatwick, and one at JFK.

I have been flying (at the controls) in and out of LHR for 13 years. I have done 2 go-arounds ....

Both for a/c slow to vacate.

Thanks for your replies.

I have had a ANOTHER Go Around this morning, coming into Dublin again, so that is two in less than a month.

This time it was the wind that caused the Go Around and we were even closer to the runway than the last time.

As a frequent but very nervous flyer I found the experience scary, but again, I say thanks to the crew for their communication and above all getting us down safely.

I have three more flights this week and will be keeping my fingers crossed that it won't happen again.

Statistically anyway, I have had more than my share of this experience to do me for a long while.

I have had five in 750 sectors or so, although the first was more of a missed approach from 2000ft. The other four were from decision height.

1. Kansas City - Medical emergency needed priority in front of us.
2. Edinburgh - High winds
3. London Heathrow - Aircraft in front not vacated
4. Geneva - Cabin not secure
5. London Gatwick - Windshear warning.

I was on a flight from DUB to DXB that departed on time but arrived 10 hours late. Beat that!

We were diverted TO Guernsey when Jersey was fogged in. My first time on a hydrofoil the next day.

2 shots at Guernsey then a couple of shots at Jersey then off to Southampton?.

I think there was actually one flight that managed 6 GA's before finding the ground 50miles inland in France. Then everyone got put under hotel arrest by the French authorities who didn't have a passport.
