Is it possible to renew my South African CPL in the US or Europe?

Yip, it is possible. AIC 18.33 stipulates the requirements and paperwork you need to submit within 30 days of your recurrency check with your foreign operator.
You can find it here: http://www.caa.co.za/resource%20center/AIC'S/AIC%2018.33.pdf

Information on the fees can be found here: http://www.caa.co.za/resource%20center/licensing&exams/Documents/Licencing%20Information/Licensing%20Fees.htm

As far as I know, only by mail via CAA in SA.

Yes, this AIC has been published by the SA CAA, yet it does NOT state the full requirements for a licence renewal! According to the legislation (Regulation 67.00.11) the AVMED folks would also like you to send along a lung function test, full eye exam incl. colour vision test as well as ECG/ stress ECG and audio gram tests!

According to an email I received from them 9 months ago (YES, NINE MONTHS!) they (CAA) are looking in to this little "discrepancy". Ha! ICAO responsibilities to licence holders do not apply us!

In the mean time, money taken and absolute refusal to acknowledge or respond to numerous emails and telephone calls from the UK!

So......is this my opportunity to name and shame the incompetent ones? No need, IT APPLIES TO EVERYONE IN LICENCING AND THE SO-CALLED "DOCTORS" IN AVMED!

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. 👍

G'day folks

Would appreciate if anyone can help with the following;

In regards to AIC 18.33 item 2.2.1(c) where the applicant must be the holder of a commercial or ATP pilot license issued by the licensing authority of that country.
Will a foreign validation work to satisfy the above?

Thanks

Negative!

A validation issued by a foreign country is a validation of your RSA licence. Trying to use a validation to get your RSA licence renewed is circular logic. Anyway, your validation is only valid for as long as your RSA licence is valid. If your RSA licence lapses, your validation lapses too.

If your validation is lapsed, how can you use it to get your RSA licence re-issued?

In case the link above doesn't work, try the following to access AIC 18.33: http://www.caa.co.za/Aeronautical%20Information%20Circulars/18.33.pdf

Tocum, Capslock is spot on - it's not possible to revalidate an SA licence on the strength of a foreign validation.

To revalidate your SA licence, you have to hold a valid, stand-alone foreign licence issued by a recognised civil aviation authority and every detail contained in AIC 18.33 has to be complied with.

Thanks guys!

Well copied and SA CAA said same.

They approved the flying component to be tested during my next proficiency check and ground evaluation to be conducted by an SA DFE.

Cheers

it can be done using a ppc done in a foreign country. I can’t remember the right form. As long as your licence hasn’t expired by more than 3 years and you can get a SACAA medical done. If you can get a DE to give you an ground check(oral test), it will have no restrictions but that you have to do in SA. The form to complete is 61-19.
