Just came across this article from the Beeb about some guys dancing naked.

BBC News - Saudi court imposes jail and lashes for 'naked dancing' (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-24393374)

Now I wonder what would happen if there were some streakers at Qatar 2022:ugh:

Boy! Howdy! We need to import that kind of sentencing to Chicago!

The man accused of dancing naked received the most severe sentence of 10 years in jail, 2,000 lashes and a $13,000 (8,000) fine, the al-Sharq newspaper said.

One of his companions received seven years in prison and 1,200 lashes, while the other two were jailed for three years and sentenced to 500 lashes each.

According to local media, the public prosecutor objected to what he called "light sentences".

If 10 years, 2,000 lashes and an 8,000 fine is a "light" sentence, then I wonder what the prosecutor thought the sentence should have been?

I lived there for five years and one has to be very careful about conduct.

These people were very very silly.

A couple of drunken visitors did a streak at the Rugby Sevens in Dubai a few years ago. In that part of the world, it's a very clever way to save yourself a taxi fare to the airport and any delays lining up at Customs and Immigration on departure. A very nice man in a green or khaki uniform takes you to the head of the queue and does all that bothersome stuff for you.

Jeez, I wonder sort of condition he was in after 2000 lashes?

This country really is a barbaric medieval backwater.

lightning mate:

I am, unfortunately, dead serious. That little news "item" just came out this week when a "leading Saudi cleric" came out with a warning to women who want to drive (there seems to be a push amongst some womens' groups there for the privilege to drive) that doing so risks injury to their ovaries thus possibly damaging their chances of having children. (Which is all they're good for anyway.)

A leading Saudi cleric warned women who drive cars could cause damage to their ovaries and pelvises and that they are at risk of having children born with "clinical problems."

Sheikh Saleh Al-Loheidan's widely derided remarks have gone viral as activists claim a website urging women to defy their country's driving ban has been blocked in Saudi Arabia.

"If a woman drives a car," Al-Loheidan told Saudi news website sabq.org in an interview, "it could have a negative physiological impact ... Medical studies show that it would automatically affect a woman's ovaries and that it pushes the pelvis upward."

Explained Al-Loheidan, "We find that for women who continuously drive cars, their children are born with varying degrees of clinical problems."

Explained Al-Loheidan, "We find that for women who continuously drive cars, their children are born with varying degrees of clinical problems."

Which of course raises the question of where are they finding these women, as they quite clearly don't have "women who continuously drive cars" in Saudi.

But they are allowed to be in a car driven by their husband.

So please explain the difference between driving the vehicle and being a passenger in one.

The Saudi authorities will never reveal the real reason to the outside world.

Nononono. All lost in the translation. He said women shouldn't drive cars as it could risk damaging the CAR. He has a point.

No they won't. But we all know the real reason don't we? Because repression is thy name.

Then again, it is estimated that approx. 2 million young girls per year, predominately in Saudi and Jordan, undergo FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) or female circumcision.

The World Health Organization defines this "circumcision" as:

"all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons*. It is typically carried out on girls aged four to ten, with or without anaesthesia, by a traditional circumciser using a knife, razor or scissors."

Aren't we all so happy that we do business (oil) with these kind of countries?

*done so a woman does not enjoy the physical sensations, and pleasures, of sex. Less chance for them to stray this way.

A bit like the genital mutilation that goes on to this day for male babies in the UK.

"If a woman drives a car," Al-Loheidan told Saudi news website sabq.org in an interview, "it could have a negative physiological impact ... Medical studies show that it would automatically affect a woman's ovaries and that it pushes the pelvis upward."

It wasn't that long ago that serious people said that women could not fly fight planes, because their bodies couldn't take the G - especially on ejection.

When I last checked, women's bodies were designed to receive ejections, and had a spot known conveniently as "G" where the ejection would take place. So what's the problem?

RGB: you're correct, it's a 100% barbaric process. In Scotland, we now have the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation (Scotland) Act which explicitly outlaws the activity, and imposes a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment.

Getting Back on Topic ... lashing the naked dancers in Saudi ...
The incident took place in Borayda, the capital of al-Qasseem province, north-west of the capital Riyadh, and a video was posted online, media reports say.
Oh dear, posted the evidence against themselves. Common trend, it seems.
Question: do they get a lash a day for 1200 days, or 500, or whatever, or is the lashing administered "all at once" to the convicted dancer?
If all at once, seems like something that might kill you.
What are they hit with? Leather whip? Sticks? Branches?

Light sentences? What's a harsh sentence?

For some reason, your joke made me think you were referring to Miley Cyrus.

On the side bar of the page with the whipping there was an article about Miley Cyrus getting risque for some photo shoot. Attached to the article is the letter from Sinnead O'Connor. I read it. Quite frankly, Sinnead's letter is a breath of reality. Exploitation will happen, and happen more if people let themselves get talked into it. It was in interesting to see the juxtapositoin of self induced exploitation, M Cyrus, against the exploitation of women in Sudan.

I don't think women in general, in the Sudan, are in a position to avoid being exploited, but maybe I just don't understand the place well enough.
Insofar the punishment for breaking a rule (seems a misdemeanor at worst ... not what we do in the West.

One wonders: does she know that it's against the law? Probably.
She does it anyway. Fair enough, one has to get where one is going.

When she got "caught" I suppose her reaction was something like "Bugger, this isn't going to go well ..." and it didn't.

Do you think that her taking that ride/cab was done in the hopes of getting away with it, or was it an act of civil disobedience?

If the latter props to her on getting the message out at a cost to herself. It seems that the fellas filming that little vignette were enjoying themselves and laughing about it.

That's not the way we do things, 'round here, and I am glad that is so.

A few years ago someone I worked with went to Saudi on a business trip ...

While he was out and about taking in the sights, he was accosted by the Religious Police who objected to his pony tail and duly set about him with their rubber truncheons :yuk:

The bloke was a complete and utter cnut though so no-one in head office had any sympathy when he returned battered and bruised...

Those who wish to live in the 15th Century should be allowed to do so. Unemcumbered by any pesky modern innovations of course. Like those armaments that our Western governments so desperately want to sell them ...

No need for FGM in Saudi - the rate of ano-urinary-genital malformations is extremely high due to the very high incidence of cousin marriages in already dangerously inbred families.

Mac - you dont have to go as far as Saudi to find cousin marriage problems, in excess of 80% of patients in long term care for genetic problems in UK are from Pakistan. Keeps the money in the family - it has nothing to do with Islam,Mohammed taught that people should marry outside the tribe.

Everyone seems to be wondering why Muslim
Terrorists are so quick to commit suicide.
Lets have a look at the evidence:
- No Christmas
- No television
- No nude women
- NO FOOTBALL
- No pork chops
- No hot dogs
- No burgers
- NO BEER
- NO BACON
- Rags for clothes
- Towels for hats
- CONSTANT WAILING FROM SOME IDIOT IN A TOWER
- More than one wife
More than one mother in law
- You can't shave
- Your wife can't shave
- You can't wash off the smell of donkey
- YOU COOK OVER BURNING CAMEL SHIT
- Your wife is picked by someone else for you
- and your wife smells worse than your donkey
Then they tell you that "when you die, it all gets better"??
Well no sh*T SHERLOCK!....
It's not like it could get much worse

THE MUSLIMS ARE NOT HAPPY!

They're not happy in Gaza .
They're not happy in Egypt ..
They're not happy in Libya .
They're not happy in Morocco ..
They're not happy in Iran ..
They're not happy in Iraq ..
They're not happy in Yemen ..
They're not happy in Afghanistan ..
They're not happy in Pakistan ..
They're not happy in Syria ..
They're not happy in Lebanon ..

SO, WHERE ARE THEY HAPPY?

They're happy in Australia .
They're happy in Canada ....
They're happy in England ...
They're happy in France .....
They're happy in Italy ..
They're happy in Germany .....
They're happy in Sweden ..
They're happy in the USA .....
They're happy in Norway ..
They're happy in Holland ....
They're happy in Denmark .

Basically, they're happy in every country that is not Muslim
and unhappy in every country that is!

AND WHO DO THEY BLAME?

Not Islam.
Not their leadership.
Not themselves.

THEY BLAME THE COUNTRIES THEY ARE HAPPY IN!

AND THEN; They want to change those countries to be like....
THE COUNTRY THEY CAME FROM WHERE THEY WERE UNHAPPY!

Excuse me, but I can't help wondering...
How damn dumb can you get?
