However it seems it has caused NZ$10 million of damage as all four main rotor blades and the tail rotor on the NH90 were badly
damaged, and several other structural parts need replacement or repair.Labour's defence spokesman Phil Goff wants to
know more about what happened.
He says he'll be trying to get to the bottom of what happened this week.
The NH90 is designed to withstand a lightning strike
and Mr Goff wants to know more about the damage, and how long the aircraft will be out of commission.

The wrong kind of lightning?

But really, how careless to push the aircraft out of the hangar just as a thunderstorm was developing. And as for leaving a javelin sticking up vertically from the main rotor head...you could almost believe that they wanted their lovely No Hope 90 to get struck...

New Zealand NH90 hit by lightening

Interesting. Aircraft are usually "hit' by overruns in weight rather than reductions - is this detrimental in some way?

AB

The OP was not referring to that kind of lightening- idiot, it was about the paint fading much earlier than expected. Silly boy!

Strange - I didn't know there were any more Lightings in service. :)

You all got it wrong. The correct spelling is LITENING (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LITENING_targeting_pod).
However, it is strange that the report mentions the targeting pod but not the weapon system used in the strike.:E
