View Full Version : Non-Certified avionics in certified aircraft in Australia

Good morning all.
Just wondering if it is possible to install non-certified avionics (Specifically a Garmin G3X) into a certified aircraft such as a C172 or Warrior/Archer in Australia?

Is it possible to get an STC, with the right paperwork to do this?

If not as a direct replacement, would it be possible to put a G3X dual screen on the left, and the minimum required instruments on the right as a backup, ie:Alt, ASI etc. A Garmin GNS430 and transponder would be in the centre.

GA aircraft are aging, and maint costs continue to rise. You can currently install a G3X with 3 axis autopilot for $8,000USD, and it's new, not 40 years old.

First off, STC's for avionics equipment can be quite limited due to the complexity of manufacturers getting the approvals for their products for each and every aircraft available. Also, the variation of equipment between individual aircraft make it impractical to do a one-size-fits-all arrangement. Check out this link for a database of current FAA STC's and you might get lucky.

You'll need to have an Engineering Order made by a CASR 21 approved person to install anything if there's no STC available. As far as fitting non cert equipment goes, most likely no, but that will come down to the person approving and designing the installation. Check out this CASA link for basic equipment TSO's.

Ultimately it may be easier to pick out equipment that has the appropriate TSO approvals and then approach a CASR 21 person with what you'd like fitted to design the entire install.

It also depends on the aircraft Category.

Day VFR you would find a lot easier to install non-TSO avionics, but IFR or even NVFR it is unlikely.
