Hi all,

(I know this has been a topic in the past, so be nice!!!... but just in case things have changed!!)

I want to convert my UK ATPL/H to an FAA ATPL/H. Has anyone done this recently? How many and which conversions (written) exams have to be taken? Can this still be done at Farnborough or Paris?
How long will the (written) conversion exams be valid for after a sitting?
Is there a flight test required in order to be issued with a ATPL FAA licence, or is this just a requirement for a CPL (conversion) licence?
Where to get the right study material? (Gleim/asa)?

Any others ins and outs much appreciated!!

You need to meet all the hours requirements for the US ATP, and then do the written test AND practical test. There is no straight conversion.

Sec. 61.153

Eligibility requirements: General.

To be eligible for an airline transport pilot certificate, a person must:
(a) Meet the following age requirements:


(1) For an airline transport pilot certificate obtained under the aeronautical experience requirements of §§ 61.159, 61.161, or 61.163, be at least 23 years of age; or
(2) For an airline transport pilot certificate obtained under the aeronautical experience requirements of § 61.160, be at least 21 years of age.


(b) Be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. If the applicant is unable to meet one of these requirements due to medical reasons, then the Administrator may place such operating limitations on that applicant's pilot certificate as are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft;
(c) Be of good moral character;

(d) Meet at least one of the following requirements:


(1) Holds a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating issued under this part;
(2) Meet the military experience requirements under Sec. 61.73 of this part to qualify for a commercial pilot certificate, and an instrument rating if the person is a rated military pilot or former rated military pilot of an Armed Force of the United States; or

(3) Holds either a foreign airline transport pilot license with instrument privileges, or a foreign commercial pilot license with an instrument rating, that--


(i) Was issued by a contracting State to the Convention on International Civil Aviation; and
(ii) Contains no geographical limitations.

(e) After July 31, 2014, for an airline transport pilot certificate with an airplane category multiengine class rating or an airline transport pilot certificate obtained concurrently with an airplane type rating, receive a graduation certificate from an authorized training provider certifying completion of the airline transport pilot certification training program specified in § 61.156 before applying for the knowledge test required by paragraph (g) of this section;
(f) Meet the aeronautical experience requirements of this subpart that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought before applying for the practical test;

(g) Pass a knowledge test on the aeronautical knowledge areas of Sec. 61.155(c) of this part that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought;

(h) Pass the practical test on the areas of operation listed in Sec. 61.157(e) of this part that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought; and

(i) Comply with the sections of this subpart that apply to the aircraft category and class rating sought.

Sec. 61.161

Aeronautical experience: Rotorcraft category and helicopter class rating.

(a) A person who is applying for an airline transport pilot certificate with a rotorcraft category and helicopter class rating, must have at least 1,200 hours of total time as a pilot that includes at least:
(1) 500 hours of cross-country flight time;
(2) 100 hours of night flight time, of which 15 hours are in helicopters;
(3) 200 hours of flight time in helicopters, which includes at least 75 hours as a pilot in command, or as second in command performing the duties of a pilot in command under the supervision of a pilot in command, or any combination thereof; and
(4) 75 hours of instrument flight time in actual or simulated instrument meteorological conditions, of which at least 50 hours are obtained in flight with at least 25 hours in helicopters as a pilot in command, or as second in command performing the duties of a pilot in command under the supervision of a pilot in command, or any combination thereof.
(b) Training in a flight simulator or flight training device may be credited toward the instrument flight time requirements of paragraph (a)(4) of this section, subject to the following:
(1) Training in a flight simulator or a flight training device must be accomplished in a flight simulator or flight training device that represents a rotorcraft.
(2) Except as provided in paragraph (b)(3) of this section, an applicant may receive credit for not more than a total of 25 hours of simulated instrument time in a flight simulator and flight training device.
(3) A maximum of 50 hours of training in a flight simulator or flight training device may be credited toward the instrument flight time requirements of paragraph (a)(4) of this section if the aeronautical experience is accomplished in an approved course conducted by a training center certificated under part 142 of this chapter.


As for whether you can so the test outside the US---cannot help you.

Anyone knows which exams and which subjects are required, to convert a UK ATPL/h to FAA ATP/h? Where is best place to buy the study material, online exam question, etc... (Dauntless,Gleim)?

Edit: Beats me how people claiming to be atpl holders are not able to do their homework.Guess it's easier to have others do the work.

Thank you for the reply, although there's := need for your extra 'edit' rant

I've spoken/emailed Flight Safety Int/FSDO's/Dauntless,etc... But did not find out which subjects are required. Ie: if you convert from JAA to CASA the only required conversion exams are Air Law/Human Factors/(IREX), so hence my question if anyone knew which subjects. My question regarding where to best buy the 'test prep' ,is due to the many different companies that offer these study materials, ie: Dauntless,Gleim,asa, etc. So was just trying to find out which is best!

Don't assume I'm unable to do my homework! Just trying to get my head around it, and looking for the right info!!!

There have been plenty of people on this forum asking exactly the SAME question (including me)..

And it makes a big difference if you say "I found these three programs-which is better to prepare myself" then just to ask "Can someone send me the software right to my house"....

Especially as the "new guy":
Show some effort.
Works great in internet forums as well as in new jobs....

Maybe I could have been more clear in my original post, and I'll keep that in mind for any future posts. Although I don't see what it matters being the 'new guy'. Been around long enough in the industry. (including this forum, to know certain characters). (And I meant that in a good way)!!
