Was watching EIN073 en-route from Faro to Belfast City a short while-ago it descend from FL360 to FL280 after passing the point STG over Northern Spain, this seems unusual however I know it was still in Spanish airspace, It seems to be gone off radar now and is probably entering Shanwick control but does this altitude not seem unusual to anyone?

Just to add EIN491 has descend to FL290 so I'm guessing its due to Westbound traffic, are such low altitudes a regular occurrence? Its the first time I've seen such low altitudes.

Could be many reasons. Strong headwinds (though unlikely in that direction) or possibly significant CAT between 290 and 360 in that area. Or a host of other reasons. Who cares really?

Are we not allowed ask questions about something we have an interest in?

I wouldn't call FL280 a low altitude although I know that some aircraft fly much higher.

Just landed (on time) at BHD.

That's a fair point but in relation to fuel burn wouldn't that be an avoided altitude for medium range European flights? Typical the cruise altitude for EIN073 the last few weeks has been FL360 - FL370. EIN073, EIN883, EIN491 and an easyJet and Thomas Cook flight on the same track heading to Shanwick all descended to altitudes between FL270 - FL300 after leaving Santiago in Spain, It just seemed odd that's all. There wasn't a lot of Westbound traffic and the wind was coming directly from the West so no headwinds.

Yes of course you are, and I gave you two plausible answers. But, equally, am I not allowed to express an opinion?

Well, if others did the same then I'd say it was most likely due to significant turbulence, as I already told you.

And thank you for your answers, of course, but by expressing your opinion and finishing with ''Who cares really?'' Isn't going to earn you mutual respect.

most likely due to significant turbulence,

Makes sense! Thanks.
