BBC News - Uri Geller mystified by letterbox on Thames Sonning Bridge (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-24028902)

But I'm sure Prunners know not only why but how.

Pilllar Box ?

Some years back, I picked up a box just like that at a demolition yard. It had VR on it so was pre-1901.

Unfortunately the GPO wouldn't let me have a key for the lock as it would also open all other such boxes still in use(!)

By the power of Google I keyed in the locksmiths name and, yep, they are still going in S. London.

But wouldn't let me have a key either! :(

Not that this helps explain anything though....................

why would one wonder at anything odd from the land of crop circles, banksy and other obviously inexplicable english happenings.:E

Shouldn't be too hard to find a suitable blank and file one up.

It was for the people plying their trade using barges etc in olden times, and might still be in use for the 'odd' leisure boater who wants to send mail whilst underway on Father Thames :8

Probably put there by Geller so he could be pictured pointing at it in wonder.

Cynical, moi ?

Actually, the main question IMHO is whether it's a complete box sunk into the brickwork, or just the front.

Is this Britain's least used letter box? (http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?366662-Is-this-Britain-s-least-used-letter-box&highlight=letterbox)

Those pesky river tidier uppers removing those reeds that have covered it up for the past umpteen years

It was installed by the BBC as the central plank for the planned Doctor Who series but then someone suggested a police call box might be a better idea..............

The most important question, that every single poster has missed, is:

Why isn't the letterbox bending into a U-shape, as Uri Geller points at it!!??

Because he doesn't have any 'magic' powers as everyone knows :ok:

er340790 A good locksmith will be able to cut you a key.
Have you still got the box ?
