Just driven the Newell highway on a road trip. Musing on the number of people who could have done their business by air and what it costs for the twelve hour drives we have to do.

Actually I wasn't flying because I'm doing a road trip in the new land cruiser. My partner of Ten years died of cancer Two week ago and I'm taking the advice of friends to get out of town for a while. Flying is out of the question when you feel like crying every hour or two, we did some fun trips together. I'm at noosa now and going to take the slow way back to Melbourne. Might go to maroochy and see if an instructor is around and an aircraft for a scenic, brought me ticket with me just in case.


The drive up the Newall made me think of the opportunity costs associated with thousands of agribusiness people driving god knows where at a mind numbing 110kmh when they could be flying.

Bit of thread drift if I can.

Overtaking a B-Double doing 100KPH on the Newell Hwy in safety makes for breaking the speed limit if one is to remain on the wrong side of the road for the least time possible.

Current thinking is to have B-Triples on this same Highway.:rolleyes:

The Newell is "infested" with speed cameras that mainly catch those overtaking at more than the posted speed limit of 110 KMH.

Given this, the Highway is a good for State revenue which probably negates any benefit those "millionaire's" flying around the place can offset.

A bit like all those millionaire's with tax dodging fringe benefit motor cars.

My experience in GA is that the vast amount of charter is government work, either directly or indirectly. Obviously, this excludes scenic stuff.

When government money dries up GA slows to a crawl.

Good onya Sunny get out there & take yr fond memories with you on the Rd as you contemplate that life is but a brief interlude & we should all enjoy it to the max:ok: Positive attitude is everything:ok:

For the most part people on any major Hwy are traveling for a variety of reasons
some pleasure some business & the reasons why they drive are of economy. Flying as we all know for pleasure or at some level of commercialism is damned expensive & has many pit falls mainly weather & convenience or that could be inconvenience.

There's not enuf dromes scattered around this wide brown land of ours, not enuf fuel outlets, not enuf back up facilities not to mention ground transport needed when you get there.
Flying has a very specific set of possibilities but using that medium of transport for everyday use such as we see on the Rds is simply never gunna happen.

I don't know you and didn't know your partner but I know of the experience you have been through so I do offer my sympathies to you.

As for driving the Newell and flying, when its just as easy to get into a plane and fly as it is to get into a cruiser and drive then you might notice less cars on the road and more lighties in the air.

Sounds like you made a good choice to take the car, well done.
