Essendon Airport has released is preliminary draft master plan for 2013-2033 which includes a proposal to shorten the north-south runway to create more retail space, a few more FIFO flights per week and a slight increase in annual aircraft movements (albeit with less small single/twin traffic).

Oh can't wait to see the response/s from the Close En Airport group, an increase in movements.

That place is a nightmare to get around these days, am glad I had the opportunity to go there as a kid when it was an Airport of importance.

Commercialism will rip that place apart over the coming years.

Close Essendon Group, now called Fly Safe, has a public meeting on September 18 to discuss the master plan.
I would think shortening the North South runway at the southern end would please them (short of closing the airport) as it would mean aircraft would be higher when coming in to land or taking off over Strathmore.

Higher actually means bigger noise foot print! ;)

Short runway and wet. Recipe for over-runs.

The length of the Rwy's has little to do with it as far as these clowns are concerned, their thinking MORE movements, that's the issue LESS is good 4 them or even better close it!
I almost feel sorry for this bunch, they are running around directionless as they haven't got a snow flakes hope in hell of having EN closed (for A/C) in our lifetime but I guess their welcome to try as we live in a democratic society, well for now anyway!

Higher actually means bigger noise foot print!HH,
Not the way it works, and distance from the noise source is hugely important, the distance/noise energy level is not a linear function. Fundamentally, double the distance, a quarter the noise. Further, noise does spread sideways, you know, not just in a narrow area beneath the aircraft.

Thus, relatively small increases in vertical distance produce significant reductions in noise at ground level. That is why noise abatement departures are flown the way they are.

To shorten the runway is a breach of the terms of the airport head lease., S.9 from memory.

It's going to be a shame if they shorten the runway. What am I going to look at when I buy my claret at Dan Murphy's which is next to the 34 threshold? The corporate jets always get a crowd when they line up!
Not one person says, gee I wish they were not here. A lady came up to me and said, how beautiful is that? As the Lear departed.

Folks,
No wonder we are in trouble, here is a clear breach of the terms of the head lease ---- and all you can say it would be a shame if the runway is shortened.

What part of "breach of the lease" don't you understand.
Reducing the length of a runway is a breach of the lease.

Essendon needs a support group to fight for it, like Archerfield now has, the Archerfield Airport Chamber of Commerce has won every round of the battle so far --- rather than just ringing of hands and rolling over to developers of non-aviation structures that (in this case propose to) breach a clear condition of the lease.
