It would seem great progress is being made by the US Army in sustaining successful efforts in preventing Blue on Blue Attacks on Friendly Aircraft.

Army Air Defense Artillery Unit Recognized For 365 Days Without Shooting Down Friendly Aircraft (http://www.duffelblog.com/2013/08/air-defense-friendly-fire/)

Well let me be the special snowflake who is offended by someone treating the deaths of aviators quite so flippantly in a piss-poor attempt at irony. How much ingrained incompetence does it take before fratricide can be regarded as a joke within a Military Unit? Just to be clear, I'm offended by the article, not the post. Once it's out there it's out there.

I think back to an incident that happened in Subic Bay back during the Vietnam War. British Frigate visiting Subic.

In the US Navy Chiefs Mess....after a lengthy evening swapping views on events....one American Chief reminded the Brits their absence in Vietnam was duly noted and challenged.

A Brit replied they RN would have been glad to pitch in but the North Vietnamese seemed to be doing quite well without British help.

I can see the humour in that......just as I can see the humour in everything the Duffle Blog folks put out.

If this kind of humor.....actually Satire, somehow offends you.....that is your particular cross to bear. Perhaps you might get someone to explain it to you.

Satire or banter is fine, and perhaps we should all be able to se it as such.

The reality of blue on blue is not funny in any way, but satire and Micky taking are something separate IMHO. I have pondered a lot about what would go through my mind in a blue on blue if I knew I was being shot at by my own side. I would want to live I and would have had to make the decision to deliberately try to kill someone on my side to prevent my death. I imagine that would have had a heavy effect on me for all time. This is the kind of thing in military life that leads to banter and satire........plus micky taking is just plain funny sometimes

I vaguely recall an incident in GW2 where some trigger-happy US forces fired on an RAF helicopter? Whereupon the helicopter landed next to the gun site and the crewman 'exchanged words' with the dimwit who'd fired at them?

A senior RAF officer reportedly said something along the lined of "These helicopter crews don't suffer fools gladly".

After the US shot down an RAF Tornado on 22 Mar 2003, killing the crew, this response from an F-16 was somewhat more robust:

On Monday, 24 March 2003, at 15:40 local time (07:40 Eastern Time), about 30 miles south of An Najaf, Iraq, an USAF F-16CJ Block 50, en route to Baghdad, was locked-on by an US Army MIM-104 Patriot PAC-3 SAM battery. As self-defense, the F-16CJ launched an AGM-88C HARM and hit the radar of the Patriot battery, without causing any casualty.

I am quite startled by this 'humour'. I knew one of the chaps so to see the loss of a friend described in such a disrespectful way is bad enough, but to link to the actual BBC News report is a new low.

I don't think a link to this article belongs on this forum.

I suppose we have have our views on "Friendly Fire" tragedies.

If you read right down to the very end.....where it the imaginary commander says...."If we keep this up....they may let us install live weapons on our launchers!".....that should serve note to you just how mocking it is. Sadly, the problem with Satire is it takes some thinking to understand the full import of what is being said as it is not laid out there in black and white short simple sentences that cannot be missed by even the shallowest thinker.

As to "Friendly Fire" incidents.....they are a fact of War.

This thread is about Satire.....not rehashing the same tired argument about the Spams be killing Brits....we have had that one way too many tiimes and we always arrive at the same result. The vocal few keep saying the same things and all that happens is at some point the MODs step in and kill the thread.

Some of you might recall my views about the F-15 Pilot that shot down the two Blackhawks right after the Gulf War.....and how I would have gladly strung him up by his wedding tackle and left him swinging in the breeze so don't think I trivialize the loss of friends or any other person.

If you want to re-argue the Tornado incident or any other event.....take it to another thread.
