Hi There!

Can anyone explain the difference to me between the RAF Long Range Exercises 'Lone Ranger' and 'Southern Ranger'?

The destinations seem to be the same...

Thank you!

cheers RAFG

A Lone Ranger was the generic term for all unsupported single aircraft detachments.

A Western Ranger was a specific LR to Offutt AFB. I am not aware of a Southern Ranger as it may have been after my time.

Other Lone Rangers that I have been aware of have been Gardermoen, Luqa, Akrotiri, and El Adem.

The Western Ranger and Goose Ranger were, strictly speaking, not Lone Rangers as there were small servicing detachments at each.
