View Full Version : Qantas Hangar to go to Jetstar in MEL

The Mr Fixit

Released to the masses this morning

Over the last couple of months we have been reviewing our hangar requirements in Melbourne. Since the A330 A checks were moved to Sydney over twelve months ago, our planned requirement for widebody hangar space in Melbourne has been eliminated.

The MOC have assessed the scheduled wide body work, and are comfortable they can accommodate it into our other facilities. Given we have other options available to acquit widebody work, we will be vacating hangar 141 this week and handing back the lease to Qantas Property. Hangar 141 will then be leased to Jetstar for their ongoing hangar requirements in Melbourne.

For any unplanned AOG work in Melbourne, we will be able to use the hard stand, as we do in other ports. We will also be able to use hangar 101 where it suits or for work requiring more access, we will work with Jetstar to arrange access to H141.

Tony Lauder will be talking to you about the specifics of the movement timeframe and I will be down as soon as possible to answer any further questions you might have.

Thank you,

Tony

Why are we unsurprised.

He was just all ears on his visits around the country. What meaningful strategies did he talk about? I remembered he talked about us being too expensive, just too many of us, too picky about maintenance, too inflexible and the ALAEA too aggressive. He does seem like a nice bloke, brought in to do some dirty work. Under Nasty and Lowy QE will only face contraction.

No matter what volume or quality of work we acquit, there will never be a time that we reach that world standard 'benchmark' (comparisons are now being made against KLM, Southwest).

They've pretended to engage, that is, listen to our gripes, buy some new gear to make us feel good and believe we're moving forward, whilst, they plot downsizing or should I say 'rightsizing' of the LAME workforce. In the eyes of Exec management, we are nothing but thorns in their backside.

Cheer up.

.....And the slow but deliberate destruction of QF engineering in Melbourne continues.

Must be nice for the Jetstar folk to be gifted a wide body hangar. All the while Qantas would rather build another wide body hangar in Perth than allow The Melbourne guys conduct maintenance on the two or three A330s parked there every weekend.

With Geoff Dixons promise still ringing in my ears ( " Jetstar will never compete with Qantas") I see we are all on a slippery slope to the bottom now.

What a waste.

Sounds like Tony has received a "hospital pass" from upper management.

This is the key sentence and doesn't include WHERE these checks will be done.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Offshore, Nearshore or in OZ?

Hangar 141 will then be leased to Jetstar

At a very reasonable rate, no doubt :rolleyes:

News from Avalon meeting,Alaea Fed Sec spoke to David fox and not only he is giving the hangar free but he was willing to build a A380 hangar and give for free to Qantas.Why Qantas did not accept the offer.

Why would Fox be telling the alaea his business its not like they are in a position to bring any Paying Business to him.
It seems things are getting a bit desperate at Avalon with all the pie in the sky ideas that are floated in the local paper as great job boosting projects for Avalon by the CEO ideas such as a Theme Park , Live Animal Export , A Direct Train link , A Shopping centre , A Hotel , A Race Track , An Aviation Skills Training School , A Freight Centre , A Direct Fuel Line from Shell ,
A Fruit and Veg Export , An International Airport .

So how many New jobs have been created at Avalon in the past year NONE but around 400 are gone .

I think you will find that the Foxes (who own Avalon Airport) and the ALAEA who have members working there have a common interest in the place growing. Why wouldn't we talk?

Master Plan
The draft Avalon Airport Master Plan 2013 (Master Plan) and Land Use Plan provides a mechanism for the growth of the facility over the next 20 years. The Master Plan includes provisions for infrastructure which will not be required within the next 20 years, but are included to ensure they can be protected.
*
The main highlights of the draft Master Plan and Land Use Plan are:
The provision for one additional parallel runway and one cross runway;
The provision for a direct rail link to Avalon Airport;
The provision to expand the existing passenger terminal facility to accommodate domestic and international passenger operations;
Additional passenger and freight terminals;
No changes to the curfew free status of the aerodrome;
The provision to accommodate general aviation operations;
The provision to establish a commercial and retail zone; and
The continuation of the Australian International Airshow until at least 2015, and most likely 2025.

Avalon Master plan so what I think there were around only 25 copies put out there and no ones put up cash for anything the CEO seems to be a bit of a dreamer who is on constant o/s trips yet brings nothing back .

Jethro. The full stop key is to the bottom right of your keyboard.

This thread is about the Tulla Hangar. Tulla was (as was Sydney), a proper heavy facility. Not an overflow / re-config facility that has had a bloody good run considering its original intended purpose. Sydney was closed on the premise of the hangars being demolished to make way for expansion of the terminal. Tulla was given countless targets to meet, which they succeeded in doing. They were still closed down. Now, our suspicions are confirmed. Shut down to make way for the orange baby. I would not be surprised to see more silver and orange plastic tubes in 245/271/191 soon.

UP to 100 new jobs will be created with Jetstar maintenance and training facilities for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to be based in Melbourne.

A 787 flight simulator is among equipment that will be installed at the Qantas Group's Airport West training centre as part of a $100 million investment.

The first 787 will be delivered by the end of September.

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce today said Melbourne, the home of Jetstar, will be the home of the 787.

Mr Joyce said Victoria had beaten other states to win the new facility.

The jobs will include crew trainers, simulator instructors and engineers and will be highly paid and highly skilled, he said.

Some of the $100 million investment has been contributed by the state government, but Victorian Premier Denis Napthine would not reveal the government contribution.

Well, 'lucky' for JQ.

When Nasty was grilled about QE's involvement with the 787 fleet to mainline he would not make an ounce of any commitment. Obviously, it is a very different proposition for Jetstar Engineering.

It will be interesting to see their set up and if they will employ locally.

Seems that JQ are only focused on the 787. They now have H101 yet they send an A330 to JHAS H145 for a 2 day film shoot and continue to put AOG A320's into JHAS without using H101. :cool:

No surprises here.

TL email worded in such a way that H141 was given up due to a lack of "planned" maintnenace as identified by MOC.

Reality says something to the effect from senior management, J* need a wide body hangar so make it happen, VIC guvinmint giving us $$$$ to make it happen in MEL so see to it that that wide body hangar doesn't add up for QE MEL to keep it.

Don't mind so much as a strategic business decision being made at our expense, hey it not our train set after all, but being blatantly bullsh1tted to in person by a new manager just weeks after his appointment doesn't bode well for the future.

Guess the ex MEL heavy guys know this all too well!

Last time I shake that koonts hand!:=

The hundreds of jobs created are in management and cabin staff training not engineering as 787 does not require maintenance as AJ says.

Has Jetstar been given the use of the wide body hangar only?
Or have they been given a narrow body bay as well?
In Melbourne.

From my understanding they have emptied out the wide body hanger. All previous Qantas wing docking is gone.
They can now fit one wide body or multiple narrow body in the hanger.
As yet, they have NO access to the Qantas hanger 101 (narrow body). But give it time and that will surely change.

So narrow body bays 4 and 5 will be given to jetstar?
Were the heavy maint tail docks modified to accept A320 in early 2013?
And how many of the KORR guys, who got a free A320 rating a few months ago, are going into the Qantas hangars for Jetstar? 4?

Fruitloop,

If you can show the regulation under the old or the new system regarding the number of contractors "allowed" to be utilized by a company it would be appreciated.

A link would be good.....
