I drove through the base a few days ago and apart from the business park I noticed that where the main entrance to the old base is there were still security guards etc there. What exactly goes on there these days.? Is it still under military control and if so what for?

Upper Heyford is a vehicle storage depot. Many different manufacturers store new and nearly new cars there. A number of vehicle transport companies operate out of there. I worked part time for one of these companies a while back and it was estimated that there was circa £75 million of vehicles there.

Rover used to boast, if you wanted a particular model in a particular colour, spec and mileage, they could get it for you. All they did was check the stock list and arrange the vehicle to be delivered to the garage for you.

When I was in the RAF, we occasionally used to do approaches to the airfield but were asked to stop as it made the security company think we were organising a robbery

The south side (domestic site; hospital, bowling alley, Commissary) is pretty well smashed up/burnt - though the Commissary got a recent role in World War Z with Brad Pitt. The north side (airfield) is in very good condition with aside from the cars a plethora of small-medium businesses. Some of the old buildings, even hangars, have been refurbished and many of the HAS' are in light industrial use. When I was there recently it looked like you could tidy the place up and recommence flight ops in a short time. There is a strong heritage interest and access to hitherto Top Secret facilities is possible - including the WOC and Nuclear Q HAS'. The former still has the last day's flying schedule on the wall, as well as a partially removed map showing possible targets.....

I know that Upper Heyford is toted for the National Emergency Morturary Arrangements (NEMA) - so if there were mass casualties from a road-traffic, rail or aircraft accident the site is ideal and centrally located in the South/Midlands. Furthermore, last year there was a big Nuclear Accident Response Organisation (NARO) excercise there. So it is a favourite with the Civil Emergency Services.

Finally, I did my 'speed awareness' course in an old building there when I was caught doing 34mph in a 30 zone in Chipping Norton - bad LJ :=

PS. I believe the HASs belong to NATO so they have to be maintained.

Just wondering why signs regarding Official Secrets Act are still on view?

Perhaps someone forgot to take them down?
