Firstly, my apologies for bothering everyone.

In my quest to locate a long since past rich relative, I have bought the 1881 British Census on CDs. It comes with a Viewer program along with loads of CDs of different Census entries.

I can launch the Viewer program, but when I put in one of the Census discs and click on start, I get the following error message:

Run time error - 2147319779 (8002801d)
Automation error
Application defined or object defined error

Now I'm not the quickest processor in the computer when it comes to all this technical information. Could someone please tell me what the message means and how I could rectify the problem.

In an attempt to try again, I uninstalled the program, uninstalled my virus checker (just in case there was a conflict)- reinstalled both (Viewer program first), but ended up with the same error message. I e-mailed the tech service address but have not had a reply.

Grateful for any advice and help. Sorry if this is a simple question. Problem is, I'm simple too!

Regards and thanks again
Brian

We may be able to help you...but what Operating system are you using? Windows 3.1? W95? w98? W2K? XP? ....

Let's assume it is W2K (it should be the same under XP)..

A set of program files has not been properly installed on your computer. Correct versions of all files are required for any application to function. Follow the instructions below to resolve this issue:

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder where the program has installed. have a look for any file with the ending ocx

2. Click Start, Run, and type:
regsvr32 "c:\program files\your_directory\the_file_with.ocx"

3. The system should display:
"DllRegisterServer in c:\program files\your_directory\the_file_with.ocx succeeded"

Ahhh...you did not find any file in that directory...this makes life a bit more difficult. During installation the program may has copied the ocx files to c:\Windows\System\ ....but there you will find most probably plenty of these ocx files.

It will not harm the system if you re-register all of these files with the same procedure as mentioned above, just alter the directory and file name.

If, like it is here  , there are too many of these ocx files, you need to find out via the helpline, which ocx files are used for this program and than just register them as mentioned above.

I cannot tell you which file to register, but it is a common problem that due to p..s poor programming the registration of files simply fails. Another problem may be that the program was not written for XP or W2K and the registration did simply not take place, again due to limited and poor programming.

4. Once all required files are registered, reboot your computer to complete the registration of these shared files.

5. The problem should be cured now.

6. Don't blame the helpline for not replying, this error code is not very well known.....at least not how to treat it....

Good luck

Thank you both for your replies. Sorry, I should have mentioned my O.S. It's Win 98. Hope this doesn't mean that you have wasted ages typing a reply that was for the wrong system.

Told you I'm a dullard! http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/dunce.gif

I'll try to work though your solutions and let you know how I get on. I'm very grateful for your help. If I get it to work, and you need the services of an 1881 Census search, please let me know.

Regards

FL310 & Aisleman,

It works fine!

I am really grateful for your help. Everything now works fine - the FolioObjects.ocx had gone walkabout somewhere on my hard drive. Now returned safely.

You are both clearly of the master race http://www.stopstart.btinternet.co.uk/sm/notworthy.gif
I'm grateful for your time.

Regards and thanks
