Brunei's Darussalam Air To Begin Operations Next Year

Brunei-based low-cost carrier Darussalam Air is set to begin operations in the first quarter of next year with an initial investment of RM6.4 billion.

The airline will primarily offer affordable flights using Airbus A380 planes for prospective haj and umrah pilgrims from eastern Indonesia, the southern Philippines and parts of China and Indo-China, using Brunei as a stop-over.

Brunei-based Koperasi Bumiputra Bersatu Bhd (KBBB) in a statement to Bernama today said it signed a memorandum of understanding to this effect with the Brunei Darussalam BIMP-EAGA Business Council.

Besides the airline, the MoU covers three other projects, also to commence in the first quarter of next year -- the RM63.3 billion Trans-Borneo railway, RM3.2 billion Trans-Borneo bus service, and RM6.4 billion Asean halal hub projects.

The Mou was signed at a hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan by KBBB chairperson Suharani A. Ladi and Brunei Darussalam BIMP-EAGA Business Council executive chairman Pengiran Yura Kesteia Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran Mohd Yusof, witnessed by investors from Malaysia, Singapore and China.

In her speech Suharani said Darussalam Air will have the support of American and French airlines as well as regional investors, and the airline could turn Brunei into a haj and umrah services hub for Asean as well as parts of China and Indo-China.

The 4,440km railway service will cover Kalimantan, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei and expand Borneo's overseas market for timber, coal and other mineral rsiources, she said, adding the Asean halal hub will have over 1,000 factories.

KBBB was set up in 2006 as a cooperative of voluntary associations with the main objective of raising the Bumiputera community's economic well-being through regional and international partnerships.

KBBB is registered with the Brunei Industrial Development Authority, a body under the Ministry of Industrial and Primary Resources.

And once again the question is what do you do with the aircraft the other nine months of the year? Lots of business for the season, but after that, there is only so much charter business to be done.
