Now it's been a while since I did all these special events but flying around today and during Ascot I couldn't help but notice that many people are using their special event callsigns for their entire flight not just the special event frequency.

Pretty certain back in the day that the Silverstone 'Colour Colour' or horse racing 'Jockey' was original designed for use with the special event frequencies only.

Has something changed or are the new kids on the block mis-informed?

The “Jockey” callsign (published ICAO Doc 8585) issued for Cheltenham, Ascot and Epsom should be used with all ATC agencies during the events.

Callsigns should not be changed in-flight, unless instructed to change by ATC for operational reasons, as it makes tracing a flight more difficult.
