Travelling to UK - need short term ISP

G'day All,

IJ and Mrs IJ are travelling to UK in August. Will be carting the laptop with me this time. Usually just go to the local internet cafe to check the email etc.

Can anyone suggest the best way to get a dial in access in UK, preferably with a toll free number (is there such a thing over there?) only need it for about 2 weeks.

I'd suggest one of the free trial CDs.

Various ISPs eg AOL (yech!) offer 100hrs free trial. AOL tries to take over your system so they're not a recommendation. I have seen others but can't remember whom I saw.

Otherwise you could just cop a local call fee & register with one of many free ISPs. Local calls are timed but for just two weeks...

I think Freeserve would fit your bill - they offer free dial-up and 1 month's free trial before you sign up.:D

I'd recommend UK2.Net so long as you don't mind paying for the call as they don't have a toll-free number. Access is easy, via an 0845 local call rate number from anywhere in the UK from any line which does not withold CLI (use 1470 in front of the number otherwise). No registration is require, no user ID or password (use anything for both) and you can set it up from Add new connection in dial up networking without any CD-Roms or set up packages. Check out www.uk2.net for more details.

You can use their SMTP server for sending mail (details on the site) and obviously can pick up any email from POP servers or your Exchange server.

And no, I don't work for them or get commission! I just use this service from time to time and know it works without any risks associated with installing "Free trial" disks.

When you get hooked up with an ISP you can access your mail by going into http://www.mail2web.com You can manage all your mail from your existing mail account from there and saves messing around with short term email addresseshttp://www.mail2web.com

Thanks heaps for all the advice above. Will wade through it and probably just do a signup with Freeserve or UK2 as suggested.

Just a thought....I presume you have an ISP in Oz. If so, GRICDial may be just the ticket. It is a small program and has a database of just about every country you could wish for and telephone dial up numbers of ISPs in these countries. It is a free program and I use it all over the place.

It can be found at GricDial (http://www.gric.com/) .

All you need to do is enter the details of your Oz ISP in the setup, select the country & city you're in, and dial away. Should only be a local call.

The only requirement is that you U]must[/U] have an account with an ISP (in your home country) that participates in the program.
