I've just had my third or fourth Class 1 medical and have realised that on all the tests (Australian Class 1) there is a question asking if you have:

1) Ever been tested for HIV, and

2) Wether the result was negative or positive.

I'm curious as to the reason why an HIV test is a significant factor in handing out a medical. Why arent other significant medical diseases asked about?

beats me........the c.a.a and f.a.a has a better way of treating/finding out diseases, i believe.......

hiv certainly is a factor......but i agree with u when u say that there are other important questions missed out.......

anyways.......all the best

I guess i was really wondering what is it about the HIV that makes it of such a concern to issuing a Class 1? Are there certain symptoms etc that may interfere with the duty of a pilot? Obviously there may be a deterioration in the health of the pilot over time so is it for monitoring purposes?

More questions than answeres really. I guess I'll just have to ask my DAME next medical.
