Here's an interesting one..

My main machine runs Win 7 Professional 64 bit. Recently, I tried using a USB to serial converter cable. Wouldn't work, which when troubleshooting the problem is due to it not being compatible with 64 bit operating systems. Another 'RTFM' moment!
Anyhow, no prob I thought. I'll use the XP virtual box facility which Win 7 Pro has. Still no joy.

So, if the host machine is 64 bit, does that mean the the XP virtual box must also be 64 bit as well?

If the hardware isn't recognised by the host operating system, nothing is going to make a hosted virtualised system see that hardware. It simply can't, as theres nothing for it to recognise.

Your only solution is to find hardware thats compatible
Or dual boot the system with a real OS that recognises the device, not a virtualised OS

Many thanks MM,
It could never work by using the integral Win XP virtual box within Win 7 64 bit.

Got it to work instead by using Oracle VM Virtualbox and loading some old XP 32 bit disks onto that.

Both methods give you a working copy of XP but only the Oracle way gave proper 32 bit operation.
