Today's order is in addition to the 40 A350s SQ already ordered (obviously many will replace existing A330s and 777s). Interesting to see them jumping into the 787-10X as well out ahead of the ME airlines, BA and some of the other Asian airlines you would expect. I suppose ANA would rather not be a launch customer of this variant after their recent launch-customer experience....:eek::}
Also interesting that the 787-10X in this case is being positioned as an aircraft used on "crowded intra-Asia routes" (despite its long range capability?).
Article below:
May 30 (Reuters) - Singapore Airlines (http://www.reuters.com/sectors/industries/overview?industryCode=60&lc=int_mb_1001) has ordered 30 Airbus and 30 Boeing (http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=BA.N&lc=int_mb_1001) aircraft in a deal valued at more than $17 billion, among the biggest in the airline's history.
The deal makes Singapore Airlines (http://www.reuters.com/sectors/industries/overview?industryCode=60&lc=int_mb_1001) the launch customer for a proposed stretched version of the 787 Dreamliner, boosting Boeing's plans to offer a 320-seat aircraft designed for crowded intra-Asian routes. The order is subject to Boeing (http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/overview?symbol=BA.N&lc=int_mb_1001) deciding to go ahead with the project, the airline said.
The carefully balanced deal also offers a tentative endorsement of the largest version of Airbus's future A350 -- the 350-seat A350-1000 -- which aims to compete with Boeing's successful 777 mini-jumbo. Singapore Airlines said it had the option to convert some of its orders for the main A350-900 model to the larger A350-1000.
Singapore Airlines already had 40 A350-900s on order.
