Anyone who owns a boat, or plans to own one in the future, in HK needs to be aware that there is a planning application to the Town Planning Board to re-develop the site of the shipyards in Ap Lei Chau. This doesn't impact just liveaboard boats, it will effect all boat owners in HK.

Any resident can comment on a planning application, so if you are concerned about this proposal, here is the link to the TPB application.

TPB : Planning Application (http://www.info.gov.hk/tpb/en/plan_application/A_H15_256.html)

Please comment/object if you feel unhappy with the proposal

Sounds like a HK property developer trying to make a quick buck.

I'm shocked...

Agreed. Certainly out of character. :yuk:

To paraphrase another well known group;
Q. What do you call 10,000 property developers at the bottom of the sea?
A. A good start.

Sorry, I looked at the notices but don't have much time to digest the info before my next trip.
Ap Lei Chau appears to be "a faraway place of which we know little"
How will this affect all boat owners in Hong Kong?

At the moment, there is a shortage of slippage points in HK (ie racks where larger sized vessels can be pulled up a ramp out of the water). The slips are used for scheduled maintenance of boats (any new boat normally has a requirement for inspections as a condition of the warranty), and hull inspections which are required by finance companies if there is any finance obligation for the boat.

At a semi-educated guess, these yards have probably 1/4 to 1/3 of the large size slips in HK. AND, there's a waiting list for their use. It's a simple supply-demand equation.

To be fair, this has been on the cards for at least the last 5 years. Have you seen all the nice shiny glass buildings going up? There is going to be an MTR stop right there, or at least an entrance to the Ap lei chau station. Good luck with your quest, my guess, you won't reconsider that whole area in 10 years. There is a reason folks paid upwards of HK$20,000/sq ft for some of those apartments. I can assure you it wasn't to have a boat yard in front of their building.

True, but the boat yard was there long before the apartments were planned. The owners/residents can't claim they didn't know about it.

Boat yards were there when it was a fishing village 100 years ago, and a high rise was a stilted house, and they still serve the community. If you are making more marinas then fine, but to take the boat yards away with no replacement!! :=

No, but in all likelyhood, in a few years there will be a $40,000/sq ft building erected in front of them on reclaimed land.
Make the most of a view in HK, coz it will only last 3 years max probably.

LapSap,
Well said, and with thoughts like that, I can see yet another Hong Kong multi-millionaire listed in Forbes Magazine.
