I'm struggling to find either artistic or scientific merit in this obviously quite dedicated exercise. To me it looks like a tarted-up version of one of those equally unreadable "route-maps" you find in in-flight magazines.

Still, someone might be moved emotionally by it....

"The busiest airport is Frankfurt International, which has 235 direct flight destinations."

Hmmm.

They use the term 'busiest' a number of times to mean that with the most destinations, rather than frequency of flights.

No longer supported is the Star Alliance screen-saver (http://www.staralliance.com/en/services/tools-and-downloads/screensaver/)which gave you a variation on the theme.

Does anyone know of anything similar?

Possibly my eyes but I cannot see any flights from South America to Southern Africa countries or from Australia to South Africa.

Frequency may be a factor too. Neither of the routes you mention are daily.

It's your eyes. There are some there, but they're very faint.

Much like me then after I did one in the late 80's to Banjul.

it's an illustration of what you can do with data and is very pretty but it's not meant as an in-depth analysis of world aircraft schedules so let's not get bent out of shape on the details
