View Full Version : Signs from a mis-spent youth (pun intended)

When I was a train-besotted youth I spent a lot of time travelling around the real, unsanitised Europe, with borders and foreign currencies and steam trains and customs officers. This Europe extended behind what was then the iron Curtain and I also had many of these signs from Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, the German 'Democratic' Reuplic, Yugoslavia, and even Albania and Russia. Many of them have disappeared, as have the countries they came from.

For some reason, when I travelled by train, these destination boards somehow seemed to fall off and drop into my luggage. Odd really.

So basically you were a thief, a criminal traveling through Europe freely crossing borders with your loot despite border checks, customs officers and whatnot. How things have changed?

The word 'basically', one of the most frequently misused words in the English language, is definitely redundant in the above sentence.

Who didn't collect such "souvenirs" when young? One remembers living in a flat with a lovely assortment of street signs, etc., my favourite being one which read "These toilets are provided free, please do not abuse the privilege."

UFO
P.S. I didn't collect that one.

Priceless ! :ugh: :ok:

" For some reason, when I travelled by train, these destination boards somehow seemed to fall off and drop into my luggage. Odd really"

For one who consistently laments the lack of morals and standards, and displays a rabid resolve for the right wing, may I politely offer you an explanation as to how, in these cases, gravity works.

It's more commonly called.....theft.

Remember this little quote? " I am a supporter of free speech".....erm, yes, well T's nd C's do apply as we know.

However, as such an ardent supporter, I am sure you will have no objection, based on your own admission ( do you have a friend who is an orthopedic surgeon at all I wonder, the one who would seem to be very familiar with both your feet? ) to me saying that you are a thieving git....now will you?.

I must say that when I went Eurailing as a youth I tended to want to keep my rucksack as light as possible. I trust your sign pilfering was spread over a number of trips as one shudders to think how heavy that board hoard might have been?

Still those names are all very evocative of a youthful time when pleasure was a cup of Styrofoam coffee and that new Belgian girl you had just met on the train from Brussels. ;)

Confession is good for the soul... but often bad for the rep.

Een so, good onya, Cape, for having some precocious thoughtful perspective about things that were oddly interesting then and now are lost forever, and for bringing that fleeting little bit of Zeitgeist forward for the sharing here and now -- thus giving it a sort of open-end perpetuity that otherwise would not have endured, but for your light fingers and youthful Augenblick.

No wonder I kept getting lost in Europe after taking the wrong train

K&C as you know, you are on my 'ignore' list, and apparently of many others, but your utterly predictable comment (below in case anyone wishes to see it) was visible on the daily summary of thread updates.

I wasted a few seconds reading it, and I might not have bothered as it was predictable not only for your use of abusive language (contravening Pprune T's and Cs), always the last resort of the intellectually bereft, for the childish epithet, and for the personal attack, but also for the utter hypocrisy of your comment. You, no doubt, as a good socialist, are purer than the driven snow and have never in your entire life done anything remotely dishonest. A true paragon of virtue, like all socialists.

Let he who is without guilt ..............

(I had hoped to address this without the use of obscene language, therefore my apologies for using the word 'socialist' to anyone who might find that word as offensive and distasteful as I do.)

In the absence of signs we should look to our moral compasses to find the way.

Let there be peace Kamaraden lest, unlike Paul, we are struck down on the road to Innsbruck or somewhere... ;)

A friend of mine lived on Love Street.
After a while the council gave up replacing the signs and painted the street name on the road. :\

In north Queensland these get pinched by tourists so often that the government has almost given up. If you're swimming in a creek and see a pole without a sign on it, assume that something large and bitey lives in there. :eek::}

Interesting that you should have chosen 'Belgian'. They have always seemed to me to be about the ugliest of all the western European nations, the Walloons particularly so.

The comrade will be castigated down at the collective for forgetting one of the principal mantras of the struggle against the evils of capitalism.....

"All property is theft".

I believe this was the most frequently stolen sign ever, until the council mounted them out of reach high up on the walls.

A tad unfair to our Belgian brethren Capetonian. Anyway I took what I could get as the song goes...

Nope, definitely no typo.

Unless this is what you call "ugly"

The list could go on......

See, you scared them off, you only saw the ugly ones because they felt sympathy towards you.....

You're being somewhat disingenuous, HB.

One of them is Annelien Coorewits. That sounds distinctly Vlaams to me and not Walloon.

Two are of the same woman, Syvlie de Caluwe, who may also be Vlaams, and the last one looks like an actress (can't think of the name, she was in Four Weddings and a Funeral) definitely not my idea of female pulchritude. Mercifully, we all have different tastes.

J'aime bien les Walloons.

What is it about you and anything that smacks of the French Capetonian?

I know people have blind spots (except perfect me of course) but there must be some basis for your aversion. :p

Not at all ingenious, for it was you wot said

Interesting that you should have chosen 'Belgian'. They have always seemed to me to be about the ugliest of all the western European nations, the Walloons particularly so.

which is where you said that Belgian women are some of the ugliest in Europe. You did not specify that you meant ONLY "Walloons".

Now, you may not think that an example or two is "to your taste", but that sure as hell don't mean that they are "ugly" in any way.

Sure ain't our fault that the good looking ones ran from you

I didn't say you were being 'ingenious', I said you were being 'disingenuous'

which is where you said that Belgian women are some of the ugliest in Europe.

I maintain that. I also said that the Walloons were worse.

A friend of mine always said that there are three things the Belgians do better than anyone else : Beer, chocolate, and ugly. Of course it's a matter of taste, I don't much care for Belgian beer or chocolate, but I know for most people they are the acme of excellence.

Weather is odd, but Spring is coming along. How's it the Great Hereafter??

Look forward to hearing from you soon..

Then it's clear an episode with Belgian beer, which may have been too strong for you, led to you and your friend wakening up with the local fuglies because the good looking chicks wouldn't come near you, and that is the reason for your and your friend's bias......
