Excellent programme from the flight deck of HMS ILLUSTRIOUS, Thursday 9th May2013, commemorating the Battle of the Atlantic. Well worth an iPlayer re-run.

BZ to the aircrew for what looked like a sporty fly past in challenging conditions.

:ok:

...apart from the idiot presenters talking over the entire Sunset Ceremony.

FNS ... Agree ... The Captain was up early this morning on BBC Breakfast News too ... :ok:

Clearly someone out in Grenada can't get the One Show on his TV ... only a matter of time before something appears here :E

Commander Ward's World (http://sharkeysworld2.********.co.uk/)

Seems someone doesn't like people providing direct hot links :( So just Google Sharkey's World and go from there :ok:

How fantastic to see the oldest flying aircraft on the MOD inventory battle with the strong winds of London. Just imagine what it must have been like to land a Swordfish on an Escort Carrier in the North Atlantic/Arctic!

Those guys were true heroes.

The Merlin looked like it was enjoying itself landing on..... must have been enjoyable for the crew as for the transvestite...."do they do that when the ships moving too?" oh my :ugh:

He actually said "They do that when the ships are moving too" in reference to the fact they are used to landing in tricky conditions.

The subject matter was excellent - Great to see `Winkle` is still sharp as a tack! :D. Merlin and Swordfish crews working exceedingly hard.....

However... A very poor and unprofessional performance by the show presenters (Except DS) and the producers, I guess.

Wonderful picture ... a great shame that this fine ship is headed for de-commission :{

What rig was the Capt wearing? I've never seen that before.

Idiot presenters. They read from a script, and have scant appreciation of subject knowledge. Applicable to most under-45's these days it seems; including Vine and his ilk. Rant about everything, know little. Their coverage of the Queen's celebratory activities was abysmal; particularly by that silly-grinning Matt chappy! Not a patch on their predecessors. But, sign of the present generation - all digital, no brain.

There is a Flypast or Aeroplane special out on the Stringbag, fascinating reading, one of the few aircraft that actually succeeded its successor.

Alfred; It looked like a cross between mess kit, and a morning suit. Trousers with gold braid down the side. Very dapper?

Mess Kit for Captains and above, also known as lightening rig. I'm presuming it was a Mess Jacket, but with tails, and the trousers had 1 1/2 inch wide stripes of gold braid running down the outer seam?

What rig was the Capt wearing? I've never seen that before.

Lusty's Captain was wearing 2A Formal Evening Dress. Dress tailcoat or blue 'bum freezer' mess jacket with gold-laced trousers (often referred to as 'tin trousers') are optional for male Officers of the rank of Captain and above i.a.w. RN Dress Tables (http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-events/reference-library/%7E/media/files/navy-pdfs/news-and-events/naval%20publications/br%203/br3book/an39a.pdf).
