View Full Version : Raspberry Ripple Anyone ?

On the Chipmunk thread our good friend Clicker raised a question on the old (stunning IMHO) Raspberry Ripple colour scheme sported by many RAF aircraft in the 70's/80's ...

I thought it might be a bit of fun to see if we could complete a comprehensive list of all the aircraft that sported the scheme ...

Inclusive of ETPS with their Blueberry streak added to the Raspberry, DERA, Helicopters, Air Cadet Gliders etc. ... the only restriction being that it must be a Military Registration Serial ...

My "Starter for Ten" ...

Andover
Buccaneer
Canberra
Chipmunk
Gnat
Harrier
Hawk
Hunter
Husky
Jet Provost
Tornado
Tucano
Varsity

Best ...

Nice. The last two aren't raspberry ripple, as usually defined, though.

Harrier was already mentioned, but a picture of a key part of F-35B development is always worth it. ;)

Back on topic:

We've forgotten Bassett, Twin Pin and C-47. The Twin Pin is arguable; it did fly with ETPS as XT610, but the raspberry ripple scheme came after it returned to the civil register.

To be fair, the Tucano has never appeared in full raspberry ripple, only the CFS red and white. There was a VC10 with a partial ripple scheme which flew out of Bedford with the RAE many moons ago and also an early R&D Nimrod with a partial scheme. Both had the classic red fins.

Dan Winterland
8th May 2013, 13:15
The VC10 was more peach melba rather than rasberry ripple.

Were the Piper P51 cheiftens not in keeping? They offered a fantastic service when I was working on a mod for Snoopy out of EWAU @ Wyton. used to ring a Mrs Wright up at Bedford. Report to Air Traffic at the given hour. hop on and get to Farnborough in around 25 minutes. Beats the outer london car park any day. when it was being built it could have taken 4 hrs in MT past the film studios, Denham junction etc.

Always arrived in good time to have my Dad show me around what was going on in the hangar. Burp tips in Puma, VAAC harrier, the Seaking with kestral, several Viscounts and Canberras. BAC 1-11 with various noses.

Recall the Glider on the Caption Competition a while back- had a moment like that. The captain turned around and mouthed "have you S#it? His pipe was still alight in his map pocket!

Heres a couple of JP's I've photographed in recent years. I did see the 6FTS scheme at Finningley, I believe in the mid 70's and liked the colours as soon as I saw it. This was taken at Waddingtons airshow after she was retired from RAF service.

http://www.atomic-album.com/showPic.php/58091/rvk101.JPG

Again this JP was photographed after retirement at Fairford.

http://www.atomic-album.com/showPic.php/58091/rvk100.JPG

Came very close to getting a flight in a JP, one of the captains in the US airline I worked for brought an ex 6FTS aircraft and told me I was welcome to fly with him should I visit the US. But he sold it a few years later as it was a little expensive to run.

Haraka,

The Shack 3 finished in early 1973, way before 'Raspberry Ripple' came to be. The Shack T4 went on for quite a bit longer but only had the addition of some orange colour enhancements aimed to improved its low-level conspicuity during use for the early electro-optical seeker programmes.

As Beags said it all depends on what you mean by "Raspberry Ripple". Certainly that was what we called the JP's when they came in to that scheme (a.k.a." ice cream wagon" , "milk shake" " stop me and buy one" ) at the Towers c. 1968-69.
Farnborough's Western Squadron's Shack 3 latterly had blue nacelles and fins with a blue cheatline and a white back , but admittedly not much red IIRC. The T4 ( also Western squadron, but not in the same scheme) was eventually flown up to a museum in Scotland, being sold for a sum of money less than the cost of the fuel left in its tanks on arrival ( allegedly :)) . Happy days.

Seeing the picture of Snoopy brought back memories. I went on a school trip from Swavesey to Marshall when she was being converted (MA were building the noses for Concorde at the time).

I also sat in the Mods Ctee meeting when they were discussing painting the cock on the tail. Lots of arguments over how big it should be - should not be bigger than the RAF roundel etc. went on for an hour. My bit on Secure comms took 10 mins!

Looks a sorry state sat at Marshall now the A400m engine test is over.

Coff- I don't know if it qualifies for the ripple tittle. I don't know if the red and white iconic nose has been preserved. It would have looked out of place on the FAAM 146.

DA - and at the time (1969), having left the RAF for the first time, I was at Marshalls production controlling the first two Concorde noses that the firm designed and built. Some years later I was back in the RAF and ushering the AFB seats at the BoB Memorial Service in Westminster Abbey. Sir Arthur appeared and I started to show him to his seat. "Didn't you used to work for me?" he asked - I admitted that I had, and had turned down the offer of a better job with the firm. I wonder what would have been the outcome if I had stayed.

Wonder - a number of the MA Design team came to work with us at EWAU after Concorde. We undertook a number of jobs on the C130 at Cambridge (FIMPA FIS and several I am forbidden to mention) I finished my time working out of the Airport but never worked for MA. I think the best thing at MA is the Canteen! I still get there every now and again to the RAeS Lectures. I even delivered one myself.

Apologies for the thread drift.

For some reason I thought the other one was XV468 to make it look like a typo or something if one went U/S before a display somewhere.

We had Mr Barley visit once and they had been painted over by then but for some reason they were literary painted over - the Raspberry Ripple livery was showing though like VPL !! on one wing a large patch of red & blue was showing where the surface handn't been keyed properly.

They must have been quite heavier with all that extra paint on them.
