But just think of the energy to be extracted if you could drill half way down.

There's a school of thought that you'd get stuck in the middle, sweating.

I started digging a tunnel to Australia in our back garden in Surrey when I was about 7 years old. Couldn't see any reason why it shouldn't work........ Gave up when it got too deep for me to climb out of (3 or 4 feet I guess) :)

No reason why not? Well, if you were accurate you would have ended up a few hundred miles south-east of NZ (http://www.freemaptools.com/tunnel-to-other-side-of-the-earth.htm).

If the tunnel were run by MOL you'd probably wind up in Indonesia anyway. ;)

Inner core at 6000 degrees Celsius eh? The same as The Suns' photosphere.
That's about the same as it was when I started my Geology degree in 1976.
Anything new happened?

If the tunnel were run by MOL you'd probably wind up in Indonesia anyway. ... or your luggage would.

You can still do that - in a queue at an airport check-in counter. :)
