I'm looking for an airfield to base an Airtourer on and a search found High Cross near Ware. Due to the lack of info on the web I am assuming that this is a very private airfield. Am I right in this assumption? Does anybody know different and have a contact number?

North where?

TOWTEAMBASE North Weald is too far away. If I was going to a "larger" airfield I'd go to Panshanger which is much closer to home.

It may be too far away also Sackville Farm just north of Bedford as a 1000' strip to play with and good hangarage etc.

Have you looked at Benington. Whitehall Farm. Herts.

Last time i was here i must say a few years ago there was 3 hangars hidden away in the wood.

Theres also an Airstrip at Cottered.. I think in some airfield Guides.

And also Nuthamstead.

Also depends on what your looking for at a base. If you want maintenance, food, other people to talk to etc.... then Panshanger or one of then larger airfields might be best. Otherwise there are the smaller more private fields already mentioned.

I'm currently based in Rush Green which is 20 mins from home but I'm letting my hangar space go with the Auster when it's sold.

Benington doesn't have much in the way of facilities like power and Nuthamstead is again too far away.

I'm looking for a 550m+ strip with hangarage. Fuel and coffee would be a bonus. So far Panshanger seems to be the best option so far.

Did you check out Cottered, as previously recommended? Last time I was there they were building a new hangar. Nice, well drained strip, long enough for you. An easy stroll into the village for tea or more.

777 I must confess to looking on Google and just seeing a ploughed field!!! However UKGA has it's co-ords and now I see the neat strip alongside the aforementioned field and it is only a short stroll to the village. It's also in SkyDemon!!!

Once the Auster is out of it's Permit I'll amble over there.

I flew out of Cottered about 9 years ago. No hangar then - shared a barn with a combine harvester and tractors. Farmer nice bloke but his brother looked after the rental. Weird man who thought he could charge as much as a licensed strip but with no facilities.

Good chalky soil - smooth grass - strip slopes from farm end down towards West.

Note the pylons but at least parallel to strip.

I used to take off down slope and land up - unless it was really blowing.

How about RAF Henlow. Only 10 mins from Hitchin.

Indeed gaxan but it's 40mins plus from LowNSlow Towers whereas Panshanger is only about 20-25mins plus the restaurant there does good food and coffee :)

I've also heard that the RAF chaps don't like people moving the military aircraft around and, as they are busy through the week, the civvy stuff ends up at the back of the hanger. Does anybody know if this is true or not?

Theres also an airstrip at Colemans Green just west of the old Hatfield aerodrome.

Which i think the details were in the Lockyear airstrip guide..

There's a new Lockyears out this month. It should show some places previously undiscovered?

Recommend Henlow. I think an AEF flight is still stationed there? Are they on Grob Tutor still?

Colemans Green is only 470m which would be really tight for an Airtourer!

I flew into high cross farm last year, there are several aircraft based there, some in a very nice hanger and two tied down outside.

I've ended up in Little Gransden where I've spent a lovely summer. There's still a space available in Rush Green for those who don't see 550m as a challenge.
