For a circling approach with two engines it is category C and with one engine category D why is this?

Speed. You land, single engine, at Flaps 15º.

Vref for Flaps 15º is in Cat D. Flaps 30 (or 40º) is Cat. C. Generally speaking this applies to the smaller versions.

Well, if I remember correctly the 737 can only land at Flap 20 when operating on one engine.

Since approach category for circling approached is based on final approach speed (and consequently radius of turn) it makes sense that a Flap 20 approach will have a higher speed / turn radius resulting in placing the type in a higher speed category (Cat D).

Does that make sense?

Just realised you beat me to it with that reply!

Of course it's Flap 15 on the 737 not flap 20... A few years since I last flew the type!

Unless I've been doing it wrong it's CAT C for the 800.

And even that depends, you can land the 737NG with flaps 30 OEI, if you have the performance data and are within acceptable performance weights.

Thanks for the answers guys :ok:
I probably should of copped on there, its just i got it in my head that since you have one engine out your landing speed should be slower not faster, though i realize now.

Thanks
