Maybe not newsworthy, but given I was in said flight, thought I would post and see if anyone found anything out already as to why this happened or whether I need to look for a report later on.

Aircraft is a A320 (believe -200), we lost #2.

Story goes like this: About an hour into the flight, and with what I expect to have been significant tailwind (we were told to expect 2:28 flight time total, after being held for takeoff at IAH), we hear a thump from the right wing (assuming from the engine). 2 minutes later, while the FAs are asking the folks on the right side whether they saw anything, and trying themselves to look outside, another grind.

Pilots shut down #2 (not sure if precautionary or not) and we just hear a recurring 'swoosh' from the engine (assuming it is still windmilling).

Captain came on a few minutes later and informed us we were making a landing in CLT. 'Everything is fine but for our number 2 engine deciding not to fail on us, should be an uneventful landing'.

Some nerves from passengers on board, but landing was extremely smooth in CLT. Great job from the crew.

First time I had emergency vehicles escort a flight I was on to the gate, and we had to wait for another aircraft to be taken off too....

The experience since then for us passengers is kind of questionable as we are still stuck in CLT, after a very brief stay at a local motel, and aircraft that is 'coming to pick us up' is delayed, still in Reagan/National getting de-iced supposedly, nevertheless will list my complaints with the corporate airline folks after I get home, rather than try to badger the station in CLT who are getting a little hammered right now.

In either case, if anyone knows anything more about this, would love to hear about it.
