Emirates 24/7 quotes:

As it reached full capacity, Sharjah International Airport is working on a new master plan for expansion, Emirates 24/7 has reported.
“We are developing a new master plan because we’ve crossed the capacity of seven million passengers in 2012," said Ghanem Al Hajri, chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority. "We are reviewing the master plan in order to meet the expansion needs of the airport. The review is underway and the result is expected by the end of this year; so accordingly we’ll announce the expansion plan.”
Al Hajri reportedly said the initial study is being carried out and “by the end of this year we’ll able to announce expansion plan and sign the contract” for the expansion.
The airport handled over 7.5 million passengers in 2012, compared to 6.6 million in 2011, representing an increase of 13.6%. Aircraft movements also increased 3.5% to 65,975 in 2012 over 63,737 in 2011. In 2012, it handled 419,116 tonnes of cargo.
One of the main drivers of growth at the airport is the rapid expansion of Air Arabia.

There should be enough room to the north to add a second runway, then a mid field terminal.
I think the drawings from Abu Dhabi are on E Bay.

Lastly how would this expanion affect the Ajman International Airport to be built to the East of Sharjah.

Interesting times indeed.

Sure there's enough land to build 3 more runways if they want to, it's the airspace that's the problem

I totally agree, but the political pressure is on VISIBLE solutions.

The airspace problem, will continue, but a nice new airport looks very nice in the press.........

Until there is a GULFCONTROL, with unified ATC service the problems will continue.
